Bobcats hold off Wolves
RAYNE – The Eunice High Bobcats controlled the action early to build a 32-16 halftime lead, then held off a late surge by the Rayne High Wolves to claim a 63-54 win in non-district action Tuesday night at the Rayne High gym.
Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats improved their season record to 13-7 with the victory.
The Bobcats opened the game by outscoring the Wolves by a 13-4 margin in the first quarter. Halen Jack and Brandon Ndubueze lead the scoring for the Bobcats in the quarter with six and four points, respectively.
The Bobcat defense held the Wolves without a field goal in that quarter, limiting the Wolves to just four free throws.
The Bobcats expanded their lead with a 19-12 advantage in the second quarter.
Malik Poullard pumped in 13 points for the Cats in the quarter, hitting three field goals from beyond the 3-point line to go along with two regular field goals.
Dontay Leopold led the way for Rayne with eight points in the quarter.
The two teams slowed down the action in the third quarter, with each team scoring nine points. Poullard led the way for the Cats with five points, while Braylin Bannon scored four point to lead the Wolves. The Cats entered the fourth quarter holding a 41-25 advantage.
Rayne’s Darian Harmon helped spark a comeback attempt by the Wolves in the final eight minutes, scoring 16 points.
Tony Roberts chipped in with eight for Rayne in the fourth quarter.
But Kevin Williams responded for the Bobcats with three field goals and six of nine at the free-throw line to help counter the Rayne effort and secure the victory.
Poullard finished the game as the leading scorer for the Bobcats with 18 points.
Ndubueze added 17 and Keithan Monday had 11 for the Cats.
Jack finished with eight points.
Harmon topped the Rayne scoring with 22 points. Roberts and Leopold had eight apiece for the Wolves.
On Saturday, in Jennings, the Bobcats fell to the Bulldogs by a 74-57 margin.
The Cats struggled in the first quarter of the game, being outscored 16-6, but bounced back to trail by only a 35-30 margin at the half.
But the Bulldogs would own the second half, thanks to a 39-27 advantage to claim the win.
Travis Etienne led the Bulldogs with 32 points and Dewayne Levi added 26 to lead the Jennings scoring.
Poullard and Williams shared top scoring honors for the Bobcats with 16 points apiece.
Jack had 15, with Travis Godfrey adding six and Georrein Dupre chipping in four for the Cats.
Eunice opens District 5-1A play next Friday at Ville Platte.
