Eunice earns sweep over Port Barre

It wasn’t easy, but Eunice grabbed a key district sweep over Port Barre Tuesday night.
The Bobcats had their back against the wall Tuesday night against the Red Devils, trailing by 46-36 in their own gym with 7:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.
At that point the Bobcats picked up both their defensive and offensive play and dominated the next four minutes of play on a 14-1 run.
The Bobcat defense stiffened as the offense took off, sealed when Brandon Ndubueze scored to take a 48-47 lead with 3:06 left in the quarter. Ndubueze was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw.
The Cats hustled to recover the loose ball, with Williams taking it to the basket to give the Cats a 50-47 lead.
Port Barre’s Keshawn Fontenot sank a three-point goal to break the Cats 14-0 run, tying the game at 50-50 with 2:30 remaining on the clock.
Williams missed a field goal, but Vigers crashed the boards to rebound the ball and put it back in to give the Cats a 52-50 lead at the 1:50 mark.
After the Red Devils’ Javan Shelvin tied the game at 52-52 with a field goal, the Cats’ Georrein Dupre hit a driving layup to put his team back on top 54-52. But Fontenot drove in for a bucket to tie the score once again.
The last 33 seconds of the game belonged to the Bobcats. Williams split the defense for a driving field goal which drew a foul. Williams missed the free throw, but was bailed out by Cormier who grabbed the rebound and converted the pu-tback. With 12 seconds left, Cormier was at the line. He converted the first one but missed the second and time expired with the Bobcats earning a 59-54 victory.
Port Barre started the game with a 17-15 lead after one quarter. Each team scored 12 points in the second quarter, leaving the Red Devils with a 29-27 lead at the half. The Red Devils expanded their lead with a 15-9 third quarter before the Cats rallied in the final quarter.
“It was truly a team effort to earn the victory over Port Barre,’ Andrepont said.
Christian Andrus led Port Barre in scoring with 20 points. Fontenot added 12 points and Easton Shelvin had 11.
Williams topped the scoring list for the Bobcats with 21 points. Cormier finished with 14 and Dupre added 10 for the Cats.
The Bobcats will travel to Pine Prairie on Friday as they continue their district schedule. The Cats are 16-8 overall and 3-1 in 5-3A action.

EHS 50, PBHS 41
The Eunice High Lady Bobcats opened their second round of District 5-3A action Tuesday evening against the Port Barre High Lady Red Devils with a 50-41 victory.
Coach Wayne Fontenot’s Lady Cats improved their overall record to 12-10 and their district record to 5-1 with the victory. The Lady Cats got off to a quick start with Stacie White and Mia Lejeune hitting three-point field goals for a 6-0 lead. Shania Malveaux would also enjoy a hot first quarter as she scored six points, including a 3-point goal of her own as the Lady Bobcats enjoyed a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Cats enjoyed as much as a 10-point lead at 27-17 in the second quarter before finishing with a 31-19 halftime advantage. White and Shay Vigers led the Eunice offense in the second quarter with four points apiece. Kristen led Port Barre in the second quarter with nine points.
The Lady Red Devils cut into the Eunice lead in the third quarter thanks to an 8-point scoring effort by Thomas. White ended the quarter with a three-point field goal to give the Lady Bobcats a 42-31 lead.
Thomas hit two free throws for Port Barre early in the fourth quarter to pull her team within 42-33, but Aisha Ledet responded for the Lady Cats with driving bucket to lift the Lady Cats to a 44-33 lead. Ledet would later add another goal with an assist from Malveaux. Ledet’s three-point field goal with 1:56 left in the game sealed the victory for the Lady Bobcats.
Ledet finished as the top scorer for the Lady Cats with 16 points. White was next with 12 points and Malveaux finished with 10. Vigers had four, with Lejeune and Skylar Ardoin contributing three points apiece. Alicia Ceasar completed the scoring with two points. Thomas led Port Barre in scoring with a game-high 22 points.
The Lady Bobcats travel to Pine Prairie on Friday as they continue district play.
