Lady Cats grab share of District 5-3A title
The Eunice High Lady Bobcats claimed their share of the District 5-3A title with a 52-35 victory over the Church Point Lady Bears Monday evening at the Bobcat gym.
But the Ville Platte High Bulldogs earned their half of the district title with a win over the Northwest High Lady Raiders.
That sets up a playoff game to determine the champion for the LHSAA state playoffs.
The championship game will take place on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Northwest High School.
Coach Wayne Fontenot’s Lady Cats improved their overall record to 16-10 and their district record to 9-1 with the victory.
The Lady Cats dominated the first quarter action after Church Point’s Brittany Garrick opened the game with a basket.
The Lady Cats quickly answered as Mariah Ceasar and Skylar Ardoin responded with back-to-back three-point field goals to give the Lady Cats a 6-2 lead.
The Lady Cats nailed two more field goals from beyond the 3-point arc in the quarter.
Those came from Shania Malveaux and Shay Vigers as Eunice built a 14-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
Ardoin hit her second 3-point goal to open the second quarter, expanding the Lady Cats’ lead to 17-3.
The three-point barrage continued later in the second quarter as Vigers and Aisha Ledet hit shots beyond the arc to give the Lady Cats a total of seven three-point goals for the first half, which ended with the Lady Cats holding a 27-15 lead.
The Lady Bears, with just five players dressed out for the game, tried to make it a game in the third quarter, with three-point field goals by Talia Jones and Shia Gibson, but Vigers and Stacie White would blunt the Lady Bears attack by scoring seven and five points, respectively, for the Lady Cats to give them a 41-26 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Bobcats would finish the game by outscoring the Lady Bears 11-9 in the final quarter to secure the win.
Jones topped the Lady Bears in scoring for the game with 22 points. Gibson added seven.
Vigers led the scoring for the Lady Bobcats with 21 points. Ardoin added 12 and White had nine points.
Malveaux and Ceasar had three points apiece, with Mia Lejeune and Ledet finishing with two points apiece.
