Basile downs St. Edmund on Bearcat Senior Night
BASILE – It was Senior Night and Basile’s Rylie James seemed to relsih the attention as she ecploded for 36 points to lead the Lady Bearcats to a 63-29 win over St. Edmund.
The No. 12 Lady Bearcats (18-8, 8-2) finish second in District behind top-ranked North Central.
The No. 29 Lady Jays finish the regular season (9-15, 6-4) as the third place team in district.
Basile jumped out to an 19-3 first quarter advantage, sparked by a 7-0 spurt from James.
Victoria McGee hit two free throws and Elissa David added another as the Lady Jays closed the gap to 7-3, but Basile answered with a 13-0 run.
N’Dasia Adams hit two buckets before James added six more points and Katherine Giles closed the run with a shot in the lane.
The Lady Jays continued their barrage with a 15-5 surge in the second period to push ahead 34-8 at intermission.
After buckets by James and Adams, St. Edmund’s Abby Miller scored off a steal to close the margin to 23-5.
Basile answered with 11 straight points, including five from James.
David hit a trey in closing minute as the Lady Jays trailed by 26 points at the break.
The contest was closer in the third period as the Lady Cats outscored the Lady Jays 10-9.
St. Edmund opened with a 5-1 run, sparked by three points from Miller and a drive in the lane by Gabby Fontenot.
Basile went on a 9-0 run, aided by six points from James.
Sydney Thibodeaux hit two free throws in the closing seconds, but the Lady Jays trailed 44-17 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bearcats sealed the win with a 19-12 final period run, including a trey by Gracie Fournet.
The Lady Jays answered with an 11-0 run, including a trey from David to go with three points by Miller and McGee.
Basile closed the game with a 12-1 run, including eight points from James capped off with a trey at the buzzer.
David led St. Edmund with 10 points, while Miller chipped in seven points.
McGee had five points, Fontenot added four and Thibodeaux finished with three points.
Basile 56, St. Edmund 45
After a 11-5 first quarter start for the Bearcats, the contest tightned up as Basile battled to a 56-45 win over the Blue Jays.
St. Edmund’s John Ross Guillory opened with a three-pointer, but Basile responded with an 11-0 run, sparked by five points from Heath Aucoin.
The Bearcats outscored the Jays 12-10 in the second period as the two teams battled for control of the game.
Basile went on a 12-5 surge for a 23-10 lead, but the Jays closed the half with a trey from Guillory and a jumper by Carter Andrus to close the gap to 22-15 at the break.
The Jays fought to stay close early in the third period as Guillory hit two treys and Cullen Brown scored twice from the baseline as St Edmund pulled closer, 30-25.
Tyree Bracy then scored five straight points for the Bearcats before Brown hit three free throws and added a layup to help the Jays close the gap to seven points.
After two free throws by Bracy, Brown again answered with a three-point play in the closing minute as the Jays trailed 37-33 as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
St. Edmund closed the gap to 39-37 with buckets from Guillory and Dylan Bieber, but Basile added points from Jeremy Klump and Heath Aucoin.
The Jays again pulled within two points twice with scoring from Brown and Bieber and later from Guillory, but the the Bearcats responded with an 11-2 run to seal the win including six points by Heath Aucoin.
Three Blue Jay seniors finished their high school careers as Guillory led with 22 points for the Jays, while Brown had 16 points and Bieber added four points.
Senior Heath Aucoin led Basile with 15 points, while Robert Murphy chipped in 11 points and Bracy had 10 points.
