UPDATE: Eunice police release image of bank robbery suspect
Officers from the Eunice Police Department are searching for a suspect in today's robbery of Basile State Bank, and officers have dubbed the suspect "The Polite Robber" after he thanked the bank's tellers before fleeing the scene.
Police Chief Randy Fontenot said, "The tellers said he was very nervous, and one of them told him to calm down," Fontenot said. "The tellers said it actually helped. He told the tellers thank you before he left, so we've branded him 'The Polite Robber.'"
Fontenot said the bank, located at 751 W Maple Ave., was robbed at about at 8:57 a.m., and his officers searched the area for a black male wearing a bandana over his face and dark gray or black hoodie with a lighter color gray chest area. The suspect fled the bank on foot, heading south, with an undisclosed amount of money, and officers canvassed the area and spoke to residents during the search. The suspect is about 6 feet tall with a slim build and is in his late 20s or 30s. Fontenot said the suspect was armed with a semi-automatic handgun, which he brandished at bank tellers during the robbery, and he is believed to be left handed as he was handling the gun with his left hand. The suspect also had the hood on his clothing pulled over his head during the robbery.
The incident occurred inside the bank, and no one was injured. Officers viewed the bank's video surveillance and learned the suspect tried to enter the bank's lobby at 8:08 a.m. with his face uncovered, but the inside of the bank was not open yet. The suspect returned to and entered the bank's lobby about 9 a.m. with his face covered, demanded money from the tellers and brandished a firearm. Tellers handed over the money, and the suspect then fled the scene.
"We are following up on leads," Fontenot said. "We have not made a positive identity yet, but we don't think he got far."
Eunice Junior High School, Eunice Elementary and Eunice Career and Technical Education Center were placed on lock down following the incident.
