Sundown halts Lady Jays’ comeback

Daylight savings time couldn’t come soon enough for the St. Edmund softball team.
Thursday’s game was delayed by 30 minutes because of a late umpire.
That late start was costly for the Lady Jays, as Northside Christian grabbed a 9-7 win over St. Edmund in a game called because of darkness.
The Lady Warriors opened with a 3-0 lead, begun when Meghan Jones singled, stole second and scored when Brooke Stanford reached on an error.
Zoie Hanagriff reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Lady Jay miscue, while Stanford scored when Katherine Zaunbrecher was tagged out on a bunt attempt.
St. Edmund exploded for four runs in the bottom of the third to grab a one-run lead.
Abby Miller and Heidi Bieber singled, while Sydney Thibodeaux walked to load the bases.
Kelli Richard hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Miller, while Elissa David singled in Bieber.
Olivia Clark blasted a triple to the wall to score Thibodeaux and David to give the Lady Jays a 4-3 advantage.
Zera Hanagriff reached on a error and scored on a double by Victoria Monte to tie the game, 4-4.
Stanford hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give the Lady Warriors a 5-4 lead.
Northside exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth as Zera Hanagriff, Leah Monte, Victoria Monte and Aubrey Armstrong scored on three Lady Warrior hits and two St. Edmund errors.
The Lady Jays battled back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, before sundown stole the show.
Maggie Larriverre, Gabby Fontenot and Bieber all singled to start the rally.
Bieber drove on Larriverre, while Thibodeaux’s triple plated the final two Lady Jay runs.
Thibodeaux and Larriverre both went 2-for-3, while Beiber went 2-for-4.
After participating in the Kinder tournament this weekend, the Lady Jays return home at 4 p.m. Monday to face the Rayne Lady Wolves.
