Rain could change Young-Frey tourney

The threat of torrential rains could effect the John R. Young/Frey Holding Company tournament that includes 29 teams at eight different baseball fields.
The tournament is set to begin today at Eunice High, St. Edmund, Jennings, Iota, Ascension Episcopal, North Vermilion, Kinder and Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
“We are hoping the weather cooperates, but we may have to move it to Saturday and Sunday,” EHS head coach Scott Phillips said. “If we can only play on Sunday, then each park will hold a round robin between three teams.”
The tournament has been a mainstay in Eunice for decades, but it was expanded in 2014 to multiple sites.
“We are now the second or third largest tournament in the state,” Phillips said.
“It is good for teams to play at different sites against different teams.
“Other teams looking forward to play in our tournament, just like we like traveling to other big tournaments.”
At Bobcat Field, the tourney begins with Livonia facing Westgate at 4:30 p.m., followed by Eunice-Westlake at 6:45 p.m.
At Blue Jay Field, False River Academy will take on Church Point at 4:30 p.m., followed by St. Edmund-Cecilia at 6:45 p.m.
In Iota, Mamou will face Lafayette Christian at 4:30 p.m., while Iota is set to take on Glenmora at 6:45 p.m.
At Sacred Heart, the Trojan will face South Beauregard at 3:30 p.m.
If the weather cooperates, Eunice will take on North Vermillion at 8:30 p.m. Friday and conclude the tournament against Breaux Bridge at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
St. Edmund will face Oberlin at 8:30 p.m. Friday before closing the tournament against Westgate at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
Iota will battle Cecilia at 7:15 p.m. Friday and close the tournament at 3:30 p.m Saturday against Oberlin.
Sacred Heart is scheduled to take on Fairview at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
“We are trying to get where we need to be,” Phillips said of his Bobcats. “We are about where we want to be offensively, but our defense still has some holes to fill.
“If we can plug that up, we should be okay.”
