VFW Post 8971 honors Americanism Essay contest winners
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971 and Ladies Auxiliary honored its Americanism Essay winners Wednesday evening with cash prizes and trophies for their written essays and drawings. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971 and Ladies Auxiliary each year host and sponsor an Americanism essay contest for Eunice students.
Students from all Eunice elementary, junior high and high schools enter and participate in the contest.
First, second and third place winners were awarded for their creativity and originality of the essays and drawings. They received cash and trophies.
The awards ceremony was held Wednesday at the Eunice VFW 190 E. Hall.
Some of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8971 and Ladies Auxiliary members were present and awarded each student. Those included Bernita Briscoe, Ladies Auxiliary Americanism chairman; Gene J. Olivier, District 7 chairman, and Voice of Democracy chairman; Roger Veillon, auartermaster; and Terry Matte, commander.
Students winning first place receive $50, second place $35 and third place is awarded with a $25. District winners won $50. Students also received trophies.
Also honored and recognized from the VFW Post as Scout of the Year was Grant Clancy.
Clancy an Eagle Scout from Troop 425 in Eunice has been a scout for the past seven years.
This is his third year winning Scout of the Year. He is a Eunice High junior, and the son of Jeff and Jennifer Clancy of Eunice.
