Eunice Players' Theatre prepares for 'The Dixie Swim Club'
Eunice Players’ Theatres’ rehearsals are underway as the cast of “The Dixie Swim Club” prepares the second show of the 47th season for opening in September.
The two-act comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten centers on five college friends who maintain their friendship over 50 years through an annual weekend getaway.
The play begins 20 years after graduation as the women of a former college swim team gather for their annual visit at a beach house on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they use the long weekend to catch up with each other, relive their glory days, and recharge their relationships. The play focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of 33 years. Simultaneously hilarious and touching, the story reveals how some friendships last forever, proving the enduring power of teamwork.
Jody L Powell, director of the show, has assembled a cast of stage veterans and newcomers, all from Eunice.
Emily Heinen plays Sheree, the spunky and organized team captain, an all-American health nut. Emily was last seen in “The Diary of Anne Frank” at EPT. Also a singer, Emily has sung in church choirs and played the piano at church.
Stage veteran Delinda Lafleur plays Dinah, the wisecracking overachieving attorney who always has a martini shaker at the ready. Eunice Players’ Theatres’ audiences have seen Delinda in “Jake’s Women”, “Steel Magnolias”, “The Queen of Bingo”, and “The Farndale Avenue…..Christmas Carol”.
Another familiar face from the Eunice Players’ stage is Jerica Guillory, who plays Vernadette, a hard luck case who faces familiar woes with gallows of humor and a spirit that embraces the chaos. Jerica has appeared in “Never Get Smart With An Angel” and “What The Bellhop Saw”. She has also won several Irving Awards for set design and decoration.
Patina W. Mitchell and Kelly P. Bertrand are making their stage debut in this show.
Evening performances will be held Sept. 15, 17, 21, 23, 24 at 7 p.m. A matinee performance will be held Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. Dinner Theatre (with steak and trimmings) is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at Ruby’s on Second St., with the performance immediately following.
