Educator, Iwo Jima vet
KAPLAN – Services for Iwo Jima invasion veteran and long-time educator Dennis Broussard will be June 28. He died June 25 at age 90.
He witnessed the flag-raising on Mt. Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945, which came after four days of intense fighting with the Japanese defenders of the island. He was the first principal at E.K. Key Elementary in Calcasieu Parish and the first principal in that parish to obtain elementary school accreditation. He was an Adult Education teacher for 20 years and a 29-year member of the board of SLEMCO.
Survivors include his wife Helen, a son and three daughters.

Former NFL player, high school coach
SHREVEPORT – Services for former NFL player and legendary high school football coach Jerry Burton will be June 28. He died June 25 at age 73.
He was a member of the Northwestern State University Hall of Fame and played two years as a defensive back with the then-Los Angeles Rams. He coached at Northwood High for 15 seasons. He was athletic director at Northwood until 2013 and also coached track and field. He was previously head coach at C.E. Byrd High and also coached in Bossier.
Survivors include his wife Ronnie and three children.Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

USDA director
LAFAYETTE – Services for former USDA district director Gaston LeBlanc will be June 27. He died June 25 at age 95.
He was a baseball and basketball player at what is now UL Lafayette and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He worked 40 years for the USDA, retiring as district director for Southwest Louisiana parishes. He was cited for his outstanding work with the Louisiana dairy industry. He organized the Acadiana Feed Co-Op and was first president of the Louisiana County Supervisor Association.
Survivors include his wife Edwina, a son and two daughters.
Arrangements are by Delhomme.

Car, bike, outboard dealer
MER ROUGE – Services for automobile, motocycle and outboard motor dealer Roy Windson, Jr. will be June 28. He died at age 81.
He was a Chevrolet dealer and opened the second Honda Motorcycle dealership in North Louisiana. He later was the 5th largest Mercury outboard motor dealer in the nation. He sold life insurance for almost 40 years and was a member of the board of Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home.
Survivors include two children.
Arrangements are by Kilpatrick, Monroe.

Former Caddo jury president
KEITHVILLE – Services for dairy farmer and former police jury president Owen McDonnell will be June 27. He died June 24 at age 82.
He was a Caddo police juror for 12 years and the jury’s last president before the parish switched to a commission form of government. He was instrumental in establishing the parish’s fire districts. He won numerous dairy farming awards.
Survivors include his wife Hope, a son and a daughter.
Arrangements are by Rose-Neath.

Contractor
BREAUX BRIDGE – Services for Scout leader and contractor Alfred Zeringue, Sr. will be June 28. He died June 25 at age 91.
He was a World War II veteran of the campaigns in North African, Italy and France. He helped organized the first Cub Scout and Boy Scout units in Breaux Bridge and was a founding father of Gary Memorial Hospital. He was president of the Acadiana Ostomy Assocation for more than 30 years. He build commercial buildings and private residences for 20 years and then operated a Conoco station for 20 years.
Survivors include three children.
Arrangements are by Pellerin.

B.R. flag designer
BAKER – Services for designer of the first Baton Rouge city flag Carol Dumas will be June 28. She died June 21 at age 97.
She was a former Baton Rouge First Lady (her late husband Woody was mayor for some time) and designed the flag during his administration.
Survivors include a sister.

Developer
BATON ROUGE – Services for developer Wayne Swenson, Sr. will be June 28. He died June 24 at age 89.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II’s Pacific Theater. He was a prominent commercial and residential real estate developer and building contractor in the Baton Rouge area.
Survivors include his wife Ouida, two sons and a daughter.
