History professor
LAFAYETTE – Services for long-time history professor Dr. Amos Simpson will be Aug. 2. He died July 29 at age 89.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He chaired the USL Dept. of History from 1966-1971, served as assistant to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and was co-founder of the Center for Louisiana Studies. He was the Frank A. Godchaux Honor Professor of History until he retired in 1995. He was an author and a Fulbright Scholar.
Survivors include his wife Helen, a daughter and three step-children.

Supersonic flight pioneer
SHREVEPORT – Services will be Aug. 2 in Fort Worth, Texas for hypersonic and supersonic flight pioneer David Kent, Jr. He died July 30 at age 88.
A graduate of Byrd High and LSU, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II’s European Theater. In the 1960s and 70s is was a key member of the core design team that produced the F-16 Fighting Falcon that became the frontline fighter plane of the U.S. Air Force. He also led the General Dynamics team that produced the F-22 Raptor and had engineering roles on the B-36 Peacemaker, the B-58 Hustler and the F-111 Aardvark.
Survivors include his wife Ann and three children.

Pediatric dentist
BATON ROUGE – Services are pending in Charleston, S.C. for LSU School of Dentistry outstanding alumnus of the year Dr. Ronald Bell. He died July 29 at age 67.
He was professor of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics at the James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina and former president of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Survivors include his wife Marti and a son.
