Librarian, historian
ALEXANDRIA – A memorial service for LSU Alexandria retired librarian and historian Dr. Anna Burns will be Feb. 21. She died Dec. 31 at age 90.
Part of the original staff at LSU Alexandria, Dr. Burns served as Assistant Librarian and Director of the Library, retiring in 2002, after 42 years of service. During this time, Dr. Burns earned her Master’s Degree of History at Northwestern State University and her Doctorate of History at University of Southwestern Louisiana. The focus of her work, at the university and beyond, was the unique story of Louisiana’s virgin forests, the timber industry, the efforts of the National Forest Service and the Louisiana Forestry Commission, the development of Louisiana’s only national forest, and the development of Alexander State Forest. In addition, Dr. Burns researched the societal impacts of the mill towns and government programs, in particular, the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Dr. Burns served on the original board that was able to establish the Southern Forest Heritage Museum and Research Center at Long Leaf. One of her favorite projects was the transfer of the log cabin headquarters at Alexander State Forest, which was built by the CCC, to the Museum ground She was a founding member of the board for the development of the Louisiana Maneuvers and Military Museum at Camp Beauregard. She assisted the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe in establishing their book collection and volunteered on plans for their museum and library in Marksville.

Educator, wrestler
SHREVEPORT – Services are Feb. 2 for long-time educator and amateur wrestling champion Dr. Donald Oglesby. He died Jan. 28 in Tyler, Texas at age 84.
He was a state high school wrestling champion and had a college wrestling scholarship. He was a former professor at LSU Shreveport and University of Texas Tyler. He was a former superintendent of schools.
Survivors include his wife Patricia and several children.
