Bearcats sweep St. Edmund
BASILE – The Basile Bearcats opened their seasons with a sweep over rival St. Edmund Tuesday night.
The Lady Cats began the night with a 60-42 win, while the Bearcats grabbed a 64-47 win over the Blue Jays.
The girls’ contest was a close battle early as Basile began with an 10-5 run before Lady Jays Payton Crowell drained a trey and Abby Miller scored in the lane to tie the game 10-10.
With a 15-10 lead heading into the second period, the Lady Cats increased its margin to 21-11 sparked by four points from Rylie James.
St. Edmund responded with a 8-0 run to close the gap to 21-19, aided by pints from Miller, Jami LeBouef, Camille Leger, and Sydney Thibodeaux.
Basile’s James scored five straight points before Leger scored on an inbounds pass to close the Lady Cats’ lead to 26-21 at the break.
The battle continued early in the third quarter as Crowell drilled another trey to keep the Lady Jays close, 30-26.
But the Lady Cats then went on a 10-1 run as Rheagan Ortego scored six points and James scored off a steal.
Miller hit a three-pointer for the Lady Jays and Crowell later added a free throw as St. Edmund trailed 44-31 late in the third period.
The Lady Jays rallied with a 7-4 run to open the fourth quarter, sparked by a trey and a put-back by Crowell along with a drive in the lane by Mallory Allain.
Allison Lafleur scored in the lane to close the gap to 52-42 with 3:00 left.
Four points each by Ortego and James sealed the win for the Lady Cats.
A last-second lay-in by Thibodeaux closed the final margin 18 points.
James led Basile with 26 points, while Ortego chipped in 18 points.
Crowell led St. Edmund (0-3) with 12 points, while Miller added eight points.
LeBouef and Thibodeaux each chipped in five points, while Lafleur and Leger each pushed in four points.
St. Edmund will participate in the Elton tournament that was set to begin on Wednesday.

St. Edmund’s Dylan Bieber scored the game’s first points with a drive in the lane, but Basile answered with a 10-1 run that set the tone for the contest.
Jacque Richard later scored in the paint and William Chachere hit four free throws to help the Jays close the gap to 11-9.
Basile’s Conner Fontenot scored on a put-back and Blue Jay John Guillory hit a free throw in the final seconds for a 13-10 Bearcat lead.
Chachere drilled a trey and Guillory drove the lane early in the second period to give the Jays their first lead since the opening seconds, 15-14.
Basile answered with a 15-1 run, sparked by eight points from Rashawn Murphy and six points from Gabe Fontenot.
Cullen Brown scored on a second-chance bucket for the Jays but Laiton Langley responded with a long-range trey for the Cats.
Guillory and Basile’s Mark Ledoux exchanged a free throw in the closing minutes as the Bearcats held a 33-19 advantage at intermission.
St. Edmund regrouped for run in the third period, but the Jays could not get any closer to the Bearcats.
Brown scored twice in the lane and Chachere added a lay-up to pull the Jays closer, 37-25.
Basile answered with an 11-0 surge including two three-pointers by Fontenot.
The Blue Jays continued to battle as Philippe Aguillard scored underneath and Guillory scorced the nets for nine straight points.
After the two teams exchanged buckets, the Bearcats took a 50-38 lead into the final period.
Brown scored off a steal and later off a put-back as the Jays fought to close the gap to 52-42 midway through the quarter.
The Bearcats then put the game away with a 12-0 run, aided by four points from Rashod Murphy and six points by Ledoux.
The Blue Jays scored the final five points of the gamer as Aguillard hit two free throws and Bieber converted on a three-point play.
Brown led St. Edmund (0-3) with 13 points, while Guillory added 11 points.
Chachere chipped in 10 points, while Aguillard finished with six points and Beiber had five points.
Fontenot led Basile with 16 points, while Rashawn Murphy added 12 points,
