Bengals hold award ceremony

There was still excitement in the air Tuesday night as the LSU Eunice baseball team held its annual awards banquet and reflected on their fifth national championship won last weekend in Enid, Oklahoma.
LSU Eunice chancellor William Nunez praised the effort on the field and in the classroom by the Bengal athletes.
“The people who prepare, persist and persevere in life against impossible odds, they are the ones who achieve their goals.
“The 2015 team had a year of hustle and achievement,” Nunez said. “I am very proud of what they accomplished.
Nunez, who is retiring after 19 years as chancellor, said he was proud to be involved in Bengal athletics as they achieved to be Academic All-Americans and champions on the field.
Bengal head coach Jeff Willis reflected on the championship run including the incredible rebound from a 10-1 deficit to grab the 14-12 win and then cruised to a 16-1 title victory over Western Oklahoma.
Several records were broken at the World Series including 15 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 63 strikeouts.
David LaFleur tied the series records with six home runs and 28 total bases.
Brennan Bozeman set the series record with 10 stolen bases.
The fifth national championship ties Grand Rapids for the most NJCAA Division II titles.
The Bengals also set a new series record with 34 wins as LSU Eunice improved to 34-10 at the World Series.
Steven Sensley set the Bengal record with 21 home runs, in second place with a .773 slugging percentage and moved into third place with 80 RBI. Sensley is now in fourth place with 157 total bases this season.
Mitch Sewald is now tied for second in program history with 14 wins. Sewald is seventh with 99.2 innings pitched this season.
Ben Braymer set the school record with 138 strikeouts, while Sewald is fifth with 100 strikeouts.
The pitching staff set a school record with 12 shutouts and 532 strikeouts.
Bozeman is tied for fifth with 42 walks.
The Most Valuable Defensive Player award went to Bozeman, who helped turn 29 double plays, had 164 assists, 76 putouts with a .984 field percentage with just four errors on the season.
Bozeman also won the team’s Academic Award.
The Most Valuable Pitcher award was shared by Braymer and Sewald.
Braymer finished 9-1 on the season with 138 strikeouts, 29 walks with a 2.57 ERA over 94.2 innings pitched.
Sewald had a 14-1 record with 100 strikeouts, 25 walks with a 2.08 ERA over 99.2 innings pitched.
The MVP award went to Sensley, who hit .374 with 21 home runs, four triples, 10 doubles, 35 walks and 80 RBI. He also had 38 stolen bases.
The Coaches Award was given to Trey Caswell, who earned a starting infield position after red-shirting as a freshman and seeing limited action in 2014.
Caswell was also named a team captain twice by his Bengal team mates.
Sensley, Sewald and Braymer were also recognized for earning All-Region 23 honors and could be considered for All-American honors.
Bozeman and catcher Jordan Romero earned Golden Glove honors and are in the running for national defensive honors.
Fee and Anita Dupre, long time supporters of the Bengals, also gave the home run bat to Sensley and a bat to Caswell for his leadership.
