Lady Bengals fall in overtime to Southern-Shreveport

Southern University at Shreveport outscored LSU Eunice 16-4 in overtime as the Lady Jaguars grabbed a 77-65 win over the Lady Bengals Wednesday in a key Miss-Lou Conference contest.
With the game tied 61-61 at the end of regulation, SUS went on a 13-0 run sparked by five points from Tina Ceasar.
Lady Bengal Katie Lemieux scored in the lane with 53 seconds left and 23 seconds later added another bucket to close the gap to 77-65.
LSU Eunice’s Amber Richard, Abby Jolie, Madelyn LeJeune and Lemieux all fouled out in the overtime period as Southern out-shot the Lady Bengals 36 to 7 free throws in the game.
The Lady Bengals held a 43-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter as the two teams battled for control of the contest.
Becca Brooks hit a jumper and Lemieux went the distance with a steal to give the Lady Bengals a 48-45 advantage with 7:00 left in regulation.
Brooks and Southern’s Sa’Vonya Robinson exchanged three-pointers before Lemieux scored twice in the lane to push LSU Eunice ahead, 55-50 with 4:45 left.
The Lady Jaguars pulled closer with back-to-back buckets by Jada Taylor but Richard went coast-to-coast to score on a lay-up for a 57-54 lead.
Southern’s Janey Jones drilled a trey to tie the game, but Richard battled with a put-back bucket to push LSU Eunice back ahead, 59-57 with 2:16 left.
The Lady Jags took a 61-59 lead on two free throws from Jones and a drive in the lane by Jessica Stout.
Lemieux hit two free throws with 37 seconds left to tie the game and force the extra period.
The Lady Bengals opened the game with a 6-2 run, aided by buckets from LeJeune, Brooks and Lemieux before Southern responded with a pair of buckets to tie the game as the two teams set the tone for the entire game.
Two free throws by Brooks and a drive in the lane from Lemieux helped LSU Eunice take a 10-8 lead, before Southern responded once again with a trey by Antrice McCoy.
Morgan Eddleman pushed in a bucket with 20 seconds left in the first period to give the Lady Bengals a 12-11 lead, but two free throws by McCoy gave the Lady Jags a 13-12 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Southern then went on a 6-2 run interrupted by a put-back by LeJeune as the Lady Jays moved ahead, 20-14.
Eddleman and Robinson exchanged three-pointers and then Eddleman converted a convertional three-point play to close the gap to 23-20 with 3:48 left in the half.
LSU Eunice continued to battle as Lemieux scored off a steal and Richard drained a trey to give the Lady Bengals a 25-23 lead with 3:00 left.
Southern’s Robinson hit a three-pointer as the Lady Jags retook a 27-25 advantage, but LeJeune scored underneath as the Lady Bengals forced a 27-27 tie at intermission.
LSU Eunice stormed out of the locker room with a 12-4 surge, aided by two three-pointers by Brooks, two drives in the lane by Lemieux and an inside shot by LeJeune.
McCoy converted a three-point play, but Lemieux scored in the lane as LSU Eunice’s lead increased to 41-34 with 3:06 left in the third period.
Southern-Shreveport regrouped with a 6-0 run to close the gap to a single point before Brooks’ jumper with 1:17 remaining gave the Lady Bengals a 43-40 lead as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Lemieux led LSU Eunice with 24 point and Brooks chipped 16 points, while Eddleman and LeJeune each scored eight points and Richard finished with seven points.
McCoy scored 19 points to lead Southern-Shreveport, while Robinson contributed 16 points and Stout added 13 points.
LSU Eunice (6-18, 2-3) entertains Delgado Community College at 6 p.m. Saturday before facing Baton Rouge Community College next Wednesday in the final home game for the Lady Bengals.
