Lady Bengals move to top spot

For the seventh year in a row, the LSU Eunice Lady Bengals have earned the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division II softball polls.
The Lady Bengals were ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll, but after a 24-2 start, LSU Eunice has moved to the top spot.
Previous leader Phoenix (18-5) moved to second place, followed by Kirkwood (8-0), Jones County (14-3), East Central Mississippi (18-3), Pima (19-8), Mississippi Gulf Coast (20-2) Des Moines Area (7-2), Hutchinson (8-2) and Itawamba (16-3).
Heading into the weekend tournament at Northwest Florida State College, the Lady Bengals are also leading the country in several offensive categories including Darby Bishop’s 36 RBI.
Rebecca Skains in fifth in the country with 32 RBI.
Bishop is also fifth with seven home runs, while Maddie Edmonston is in fifth place nationally with 18 stolen bases.
Pitcher Abigail Leonards is ranked second in NJCAA Division II with 11 wins.
As a team, the Lady Bengals lead in 10 different offensive categories including 263 runs, 326 hits and 223 RBI.
LSU Eunice also leads with 823 at-bats, 63 doubles, 34 home runs, 501 total bases, 102 extra bases and 13 sacrifice flies.
The Lady Bengals are third in walks (89) and stolen bases (71).
