Bearcats look to defend district

BASILE – A winning tradtion is important at Basile and head coach Kevin Bertrand expects his Bearcats to defend their District 5-1A title.
“They know exactly what is expected of them,” the coach said. “They know what it means to be a Bearcat and play for Basile.”
Basile (10-2 overall, 5-0 in district in 2015) advanced to the second round of the playoffs last season with a win over Homer (35-7) before a last-second loss to Acadia (22-20).
“We expect a lot from our seniors,” Bertrand said of his 11 seniors. “They have been through it already and we know they will lead the younger guys.”
Basile opens the season at Class 2-A Vinton before entertaining Ville Platte and South Cameron.
A road trip Logansport (8-5) is followed by a home games against Port Barre.
“Our pre-district schedule is going to be extremely tough,” he said. “But hopefully it will help us get ready for our district.”
The Bearcats will open district and celebrate homecoming against North Central on Oct. 14 before visiting Westminster, False River and Catholic-Pointe Coupee.
Basile concludes the regular season at home against rival St. Edmund.
“This team loves to play football,” Bertrand said. “They have a great atititude and I enjoy being around this group.”
