Blue Jay seniors honored
It was Senior Night at St. Edmund, but Bell City spoiled the party as the Bruins cruised to a sweep over the Jays Tuesday night.
The Lady Bruins held on for a 44-31 win, while the Bruins exploded for a 78-29 victory.
The Lady Bruins jumped out to a 9-2 lead, sparked by four points from Lauren Guidry and trey from Kassidy Legros.
Lady Jay Camille Leger scored on a short bucket and two free throws, while senior Payton Crowell hit two free throws to close the gap to 9-6.
Baylee Fontenot and Guidry closed the period with bucket to give Bell City a 15-6 advantage.
Abby Brown, Maggie Larriviere, Allison Lafleur, Kelli Richard and Elissa David scored in the second period to keep the Lady Jays close at intermission, 19-6.
Bell City went on a 13-4 run in the third period to put the game away, aided by seven points from Guidry.
The fourth quarter was closer as the Lady Jays trailed 12-11 in the frame.
David and Abby Miller scored on jumpers, while Sydney Thibodeaux added a put-back in the period, but the Lady Bruins held on a the 44-31 win.
Guidry led Bell City with 21 points, while Fontenot chipped in 14 points.
Leger led St. Edmund with eight points, while Crowell added five points. David, Lafleur and Brown each added four points.
Crowell and Jami LeBouef were honored after the game as the two Lady Jay seniors.
“This was the first group I had since their freshmen year,” Lady Jay head coach Erica Zaunbrecher said. “They learned so much and they know what I would say on the court when something went wrong.
“They both battled injuries during the career,” the coach said. “Jamie had two surgeries and Payton was hurt her freshman year, but they both continued to work hard and they both gave their best effort every time they were on the court.”
St. Edmund travels to False River Academy on Friday and Sacred Heart next Tuesday as District 5-1A action concludes.

Bell City jumped out to a 23-10 first quarter lead, sparked by four treys and five inside shots.
Austin Gradney, William Chachere, Drew Brown and Alex Hunt accounted for the Blue Jay points to open the game.
Bell City went on a 24-0 run, including four straight treys to grab a 41-10 advantage before Hunt scored in the lane for the Jays with 5:08 left before half.
Bell City’s Greg Young and Tyler Prather hit the final two treys of the half before Gradney hit two free throws with 1:29 left to close the gap to 49-16.
The Bruins went on a 5-0 run to finish the half with a 54-16 lead at intermission.
St. Edmund battled in the third period as Brown scored in the lane and Hunt hit a three-pointer and then added a drive as the Jays scored 10 points in the quarter.
Drake Klupp hit a trey at the buzzer to give the Bruins a 67-26 advantage heading into the final period.
Bell City closed the game with a 11-3 surge with a trey by Klupp and free throws the rest of the period.
Brown hit two free throws before fouling out and Hunt added another for the Jays’ points in the quarter.
Hunt led the Jays with 13 points, while Brown scored six points. Gradney and Cullen Brown each scored four points, while Chachere was limited to just two points.
Prather led Bell City with 20 points, while Zac Miller and Danny Cormier each chipped in 10 points.
