Blue Jays, Bulldogs clash

The Blue Jays and Bulldogs are both looking for their first wins of the season when Iota visits St. Edmund on Friday night.
In fact, the Bulldogs are struggling in the midst of an 11-game losing streak with their last win coming against Mamou (35-6) in the 2012 season finale.
The SEH-IHS rivalry began in 1955 when the Jays grabbed a 20-6 win.
Last season. St. Edmund rolled to a 34-0 win to extend the Jays’ streak to four straight over the Bulldogs.
St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said he is glad to see the two teams compete against each other.
“This is what high school football is supposed to be about,” David said. “We want to play people around us that we know.
“It is a great atmosphere to play a football game in,” he said.
St. Edmund leads the series 13-7-1.
The Blue Jays lost to Rayne (33-6) last week, while Iota fell to Oberlin (32-12).
“We moved the ball and got into the red zone several times and it hurts that we didn’t score,” David said. “We just need to execute better on offense and clean up on defense.”
David said Iota has more numbers out and should be an improved team.
“It is really more about and not about them,” the coach said. “We need to show up and do what we are supposed to do.”
Against Rayne, Blue Jay quarterback Drew Brown completed 15-of-33 passes for 169 yards, with Alex Hunt (7-88) and Cullen Brown (4-58) his main targets.
David said the Bulldogs were balanced last week with a running and passing game - but still struggled to earn the win.
Iota had 50 yards rushing and 54 passing yards, while Oberlin rolled up 288 yards on the ground with another 85 yards through the air.
Adam Ardoin had 59 yards on 11 carries, including a 8-yard touchdown.
Tim Lunson completed 6-of-10 for 54 yards with an interception.
“We’ve played them for forever,” said Iota coach Neal Legé. “It’s always been a real good game … a bit lopsided as of late, but it’s still a good rivalry.
“The thing about St. Ed’s is they execute well on offense and have a wide open passing game that causes people problems,” said Legé. “That’s why we are looking at using a lot of different people and getting a lot of people ready to play this week.”
