Blue Jays face Hurricanes

It is homecoming week at St. Edmund as the Blue Jays take on North Central.
As important as the sideline festivities are for the alumni and student body, a win would keep St. Edmund (3-3, 1-0) ahead in the District 5-1A standings as Sacred Heart of Ville Platte is also 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district.
“This is an important game,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “In a small district, there are so few games, they all matter - there is no chance to drop one.”
Last week, the Blue Jays opened district play with 30-14 win over Catholic High of Pointe Coupee.
St. Edmund quarterback Drew Brown completed 18-of-34 passes for 300 yards with touchdown tosses of 78 and 18 yards to Cullen Brown (3-104) as well as a 9-yarder to Alex Hunt (6-64) and a 30-yarder to Drake Brunet (4-59).
Hunt also had five tackles and a 38-yard interception return in the win.
Presently, Drew Brown among the top passers in the state as he has completed 102-of-193 for 1,610 yards with 17 touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Blue Jay defense allowed 219 yards passing and 275 yards of total offense but held the Hornets to one touchdown each half.
“Any time you go on the road and win it is a good thing,” David said. “We still need to improve.”
North Central (1-5, 0-1) opened the season with losses to Pine Prairie (12-6), Jeanerette (52-2) and Highland Baptist (39-6) before the Hurricanes earned a 20-18 win over Gueydan.
The last two weeks, the Hurricanes fell to Bunkie (31-6) and district foe Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (46-20).
“They have some good athletes and a few more out this year,” David said. “They will be competitive and we need to play a sound football game.
“We can’t allow them to stay in the game or we could be in a bind.”
David said he is hoping his team executes against the Hurricanes with all the homecoming activities.
“Hopefully we can give the alumni a reason to cheer,” the coach said.
The kickoff has been move to 7:30 p.m.
