Blue Jays face rival Bulldogs

IOTA – St. Edmund has won five in a row against Iota including a 42-6 victory last season.
The Bulldog’s 20-game losing streak was broken last week as Iota grabbed a 30-22 four overtime win over Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
“They got a win and they want to get another,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said of the Bulldogs. “We expect them to give us their best.”
The Blue Jays committed five turnovers and allowed 437 yards of total offense in their 68-32 loss to Northwest.
“We gave up 32 points in the third quarter including two scoop and score turnovers,” David said. “We also had an interception and another fumble that led to Northwest points.
“Anytime you have that many turnovers you make it tough to win.”
“They have always played hard and they will be a physical bunch,” David said of the Bulldogs.
“They work to be balanced,” David said. “We have to be sound against both the run and the pass.”
Iota sophomore runningback Kaleb Guillory gained 147 yards and two touchdowns last week.
Bulldog freshman quarterback Trae Rambin completed 12-of-21 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
The Blue Jays had a strong passing attack against Northwest as quarterback Drake Brunet completed 12-of-31 passes for 234 yards with four touchdowns.
William Chachere had four receptions for 119 yards including tuchdowns of 34-and 64-yards.
Gibson LaFleur had four catches for 95 yards including touchdowns of 13- and 58-yards.
LaFleur added 57 yards on 11 carries with a 14-yard touchdown run for the Jays.
“It was good to see us be able to do some things in the passing game,” the coach said. “It will keep defenses aware that we can throw it over the top.
“We did well in the running game (141 yards on 34 carries),” he said. “At times our offense looked pretty good.”
The coach said with so many turnovers on offense he wished the defense could have gotten more than just one fumble recovery to help even the field.
“We had an opportunity for two interceptions that we didn’t make,” he said. “Those could have make the game closer.”
David said the team is ready to bounce back and get that first win.
“We need to execute better and not throw the game away through mistakes,” David said.
“We didn’t protect the ball well enough to win and that was the key.”
