Blue Jays grab OT win
St. Edmund’s John Guillory scored three free throws in the final seconds of overtime to lift the Blue Jays to a 78-75 win over Lake Arthur on Thursday night.
It was the first win of the season for the Blue Jays (1-7) as the Tigers fell to 0-6.
Guillory hit a trey in the beginning of the extra period then added two free throws to give the Jays a 74-67 advantage.
The Tigers hit two late treys, but four free throws by Guillory sealed the win.
The game went into overtime as William Chachere hit two free throws with eight seconds left to give the Jays a slim lead but Kaleb Acheno hit two from the stripe with two seconds left to tie the game
Lake Arthur opened the game with a 12-10 advantage as the two teams battled for control.
After missing six straight free throws midway through the second period, the Jays scored five from the stripe and Guillory scored from the baseline to close the Tigers’ lead to 23-22.
Glen Guidry’s trey and drive in the lane kept Lake Arthur ahead before Blue Jays’ Cullen Brown scored on a late putback to close the margin to 28-26 at the break.
The battle continued in the second half as neither team could pull away.
Guillory hit a trey to begin the third period and later added two inside shots to keep the Jays close.
Guidry, Gavin Price and Jayvon McZeal hit three-pointers to push the Tigers ahead, 40-36 midway through the third quarter.
Chachere caught fire and scored six straight points to give the Jays a 42-40 lead, but Kaleb Acheno’s trey quickly gave the advantage back to Lake Arthur.
Jack Brown hit two free throws and Chachere scored on a put-back to give the Jays a 46-43 lead late in the period.
But a trey by Kieven Acheno with three seconds left tied the game again.
The teams continued to exchange leads as the Jays scored inside with Cullen Brown and Guillory, but the Tigers used the treys from Kieven Acheno and McZeal to stay in the game.
Cullen Brown scored on a second-chance shot and Guillory drove the lane twice to give the Jays a 58-53 lead with 3:46 left in regulation.
After Lake Arthur hit four straight free throws, Chachere scored to push the Jays ahead, 60-57.
A free throw from Guillory was answered by a dive in the lane by Kaleb Acheno to tie the game, 61-61.
Chachere and Brown hit free throws to give the Jays a 65-62 lead in the final minute, but a trey by McZeal tied the game again.
Chachere hit two crucial free throws with 8.3 seconds left but Kaleb Acheno’s two from the charity stripe forced the overtime period.
Guillory led St. Edmund with 27 points, while Chachere added 21 points.
Cullen Brown chipped in 18 points for the Jays.
McZeal led Lake Arthur with 13 points, while Kaleb Acheno contributed 11 points.
The Blue Jays will entertain Hackberry on Friday.
Lake Arthur 61, SEH 2
In a game where the Lady Jay offense struggled to score, the Lake Arthur Lady Tigers cruised to a 61-2 win over St. Edmund Thursday night.
Lake Arthur opened with a 20-0 run, led by seven points from Anna Shaw and Morgan Woods.
Woods scored the first three points of the second period before Lady Jay Abby Miller hit a free throw with 1:30 left in the half.
Ashlyn Trahan and Alexis Hornsby drained treys and Hornsby scored later in the lane as Lake Arthur led 33-1 at intermission.
The Lady Tigers went on a 14-0 run in the third period as Lake Arthur put the game away.
Shaw scored six of her game-high 14 points in the period, while Sarah Guidry added four points.
Josey Broussard scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to push Lake Arthur ahead, 53-1.
Hornsby scored twice in the paint and Jamara Levy scored from the baseline to give the Lady Tigers a 60-point advantage.
Lady Jay Victoria McGee hit a free throw in the final minute for St. Edmund’s only point of the second half.
The Lady Jays will entertain Vermilion Catholic at 6 p.m. on Friday.
