Blue Jays honor seniors

The seven St. Edmund seniors knew of the challenge before them, but were hoping to leave the field with a win over rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte in the regular season finale.
But the No. 2 Trojans (23-3, 5-0) captured the 2015 District 5-1A baseball championship with a 7-4 victory over the No. 5 Blue Jays (17-7, 3-3) Thursday on Senior Night.
Sacred Heart scored in the top of the first inning when Caleb Soileau walked and Bradon Hudspeth followed with a triple to left field.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the top of the second when Evan Mire was hit by a pitch, Phillip Vidrine walked and Garrick Fontenot reached on a bunt that stopped on the third base line.
Keaton Tate then blasted a double to the left field wall to clear the bases and give the Trojans a 4-0 lead.
Sacred Heart pulled away with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning aided when Jacob Lafleur reached on an error and Jacob Dupre singled to open the frame.
Jacob Lafleur scored when Jacob A. Lafleur reached on another Blue Jay miscue.
Vidrine singled to plate Dupre to give the Trojans a 7-0 advantage.
St. Edmund loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth when Drake Brunet singled, Redlich reached on an error and Jack Brown walked.
Cole Bergeron reached on an error that allowed Brunet to score.
Ross LaFleur drew a walk that pushed in Redlich to close the gap to 7-2.
The Blue Jays battled back with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh but the rally fell short.
Jack Brown singled, Austin Sittig reached on an error and Ross LaFleur walked to load the bases.
Will Chachere walked to allow pinch runner Jacob Duplechin to score.
Drew Brown reached on an error, scoring Sittig to close the margin to 7-4.
Sacred Heart’s Caleb Soileau earned the win as he struck out six, walked two and allowed one earned run on five hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Redlich was handed the loss as he struck out four, walked two, hit two batters and allowed five earned runs on five hits.
Alex Hunt pitched the final two innings with one strikeout, a walk and a hitbatsman.
The two teams combined for seven errors and 11 hits.
The brackets will be released this week by the LHSAA as both the Blue Jays and Trojans will have home games to open the playoffs.
