Blue Jays, Lady Bearcats grab district wins

The heated rivalry between Basile and St. Edmund moved to the hardwoods Friday night as the Lady Bearcats and Blue Jays grabbed key District 5-1A wins.
The Lady Cats grabbed a 46-38 win, while the Blue Jays closed the night with a 68-45 victory.
In the boys’ game, Basile opened with a 10-9 close lead with five points from Andre Reed.
John Ross Guillory kept St. Edmund in the contest with seven points.
The Blue Jays broke the game open with a 21-15 surge in the second period to grab a 30-25 halftime advantage.
The battle continued early in the quarter as the Jays tied the game twice as the two teams fought for control.
After Basile took a 21-20 lead on a bucket by Tyree Bracy, St. Edmund responded with a 10-4 run.
A jumper by Dylan Bieber and to free throws from Cullen Brown started the surge, while a trey and two free throws from Guillory gave the Jays a five point lead the break.
Basile battled to open the third period with buckets from Hunter Aucoin and Murphy but a trey from St. Ed’s Alex Dupre helped begin a 12-2 surge by the Jays.
Brown scored from the baseline and at the free throw line, while Bieber added a second-chance bucket to give the Jays a 42-31 lead with 2:46 left in the third period.
Basile closed the margin to 46-34, but Bieber and Brown scored underneath to give the Jays a 50-34 lead as the game moved the final period.
St. Edmund sealed the win with a 18-11 fourth quarter advantage, sparked by eight points from Guillory and six free throws from Dupre.
Bracy scored six points for Basile to finish with 12 points.
Reed added 11 points, while Aucoin finished with 10 points.
Guillory led all scorers with 23 oints, while Brown chipped in 19 and Bieber added 14 points.
Dupre finished with 10 points as four Blue Jays scored in double figures.

Basile 46, SEH 38
The Basile Lady Bearcats jumped out to a 7-2 advantage with the assistance from Rylie James.
A bucket from Sydney Thibodeaux and a freee throw by Maggie Larriviere helped the Lady Jays close the gap to 7-3.
James answered with five points and a jumper from Katherine Giles pushed in a jumper to give Basile a 14-3 advantage as the game moved to the second quarter.
N’Dasia Adams nailed a trey to open the period for the Lady Cats before St. Edmund responded with a 7-2 run sparked by a trey from Gabby Fontenot.
The two teams then moved inside for most of the period as Basile went on a 5-2 run to push ahead, 24-12.
The Lady Jays closed the half with a 6-0 run including a trey by Victoria McGeee as St. Edmund trailed 24-18 at the break.
The Lady Jays began the third period with a 6-0 run to tie the game 24-24, led by four point from Fontenot and a drive by Thibodeaux.
Reagan LeDoux scored five straight points for Basile before McGee converted a three-point play for the Lady Jays.
Basile finished the period with a 7-0 run with four points from James and three more by LeDoux to give the Lady Cats a 36-37 lead.
Basile forged ahead 42-29 early in the final period as James scored six points.
Abby Miller put in a lay-up and Fontenot later scored in the lane for the Lady Jays, but back-to-back buckets from Adams and James pushed Basile ahead, 46-31 with 3:43 left.
The Lady Jays did not go away quietly as Fontenot hit a trey and later added two more free throws to close the gap to 10 points.
McGee hit two more at the charity stripe in the final seconds to close the margin to 46-38.
James finished with 27 points to led Basile (14-7. 4-1).
Fontenot led St. Edmund (7-13, 3-2) with 17 points, while McGee chipped in 11 points.
St. Edmund will hold Senior Night Tuesday against False River Academy, while Basile hosts North Central.
