Blue Jays soar past Gators
St. Edmund moved another step closer to a district title with a 58-0 win over False River Academy on Senior night at Blue Jay Field.
“It was a very good win,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “We did a good job in all three phases of the game for most of the night.
“Our seniors are a very resilient group,” David said. “They battle and they are great and gusty competitors.”
St. Edmund took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards in nine plays for the game’s first points.
After several strong runs by Drew Brown and a catch by Alex Hunt, Zach LaFleur scored on a 1-yard run.
The two-point conversion pass failed as the Jays led, 6-0 with 9:46 left in the first period.
A high snap on False River’s punt attempt turned into points as Gibson LaFleur recovered the ball in the end zone.
The two-point conversion failed as the Jays led 12-0 with 8:36 remaining in the quarter.
After a False River punt, the Gators’ Blake Fulmer intercepted Brown and raced to the St. Edmund 33.
A touchdown pass from Hagen Jarreau to Blake Hathaway was erased by a illegal motion call and the Blue Jay defense later held on fourth down.
St. Edmund moved the ball 76 yards in 11 plays, sparked by several runs by Zach LaFleur and capped by his 10-yard run untouched to the end zone.
The two-point conversion failed as the Jays led 18-0 with 2:15 left in the first period.
After 30 yards on penalities were called on the kickoff, the Jays’ defense stiffened once again to hold the Gators on fourth down at the St. Edmund 30.
Brown and Zach LaFleur moved the ball on the ground to get the Jays deep into FRA territory early in the second period.
Brown connected with William Chachere for a 18-yard touchdown to cap the eight-play drive.
Brown ran in the two-point conversion to push the Jays ahead, 26-0 with 9:23 remaining in the half.
A three-and-out and a short Gator punt gave St. Ed’s offense the ball at the FRA 35.
Ross LaFleur ran the ball three times on the six-play drive to push the Jays to the FRA 11.
Brown connected with Drake Brunet in the end zone and hit Austin Sittig for the two-point conversion as the Jays led 34-0 with 5:14 left in the second period.
The St. Edmund defense forced another three play drive and a short punt to give the offense the ball at the Gator 44.
It took just six plays for the Jays to score, aided by a 19-yard pass from Brown to Chachere.
Zach LaFleur scored on a 10-yard run and Brown connected with him for the two-point conversion as the Jays took a 42-0 lead with 2:13 left in the half.
On the first play on the Gators’ next possession, Zach LaFleur picked off Jarreau’s pass near midfield.
The Jays moved to the FRA 11 but could but score before time expired in the half.
St. Edmund’s special teams did their part again early in the third period as another bad snap on a punt attempt gave the Jays the ball at the FRA 24.
Five straight runs by Zach LaFleur moved the ball to the Gator 2 and LaFleur finished the drive with a touchdown run.
Brown found Peter Miller open in the end zone for the two-point conversion to extend the Jays’ margin to 50-0 with 5:01 left in the third period.
Another Gator drive was stopped and after a punt, the Jays went 73 yards in 13 plays to kill the fourth quarter clock.
Murphy Richard, Miller and Lathan Lyons all took turns running the ball against the tired Gator defense.
Miller converted a fourth-and-one to advance the ball to the FRA 13.
Lyons then went 12 yards and the final yard to the end zone.
Miller ran in the two-point conversion to give the Jays a 58-0 advantage with 1:32 left in the game.
Zach LaFleur gained 192 yards on 28 carries, while Brown aded 69 yards on nine carries.
LaFleur had an interception along with five solo tackles and an assist on defense.
St. Edmund closes the regular season Friday night at rival Sacred Heart of Ville Platte.
The Trojans (5-4, 2-1) rolled to a 40-14 victory over winless Beeckman Charter.
