Blue Jays visit undefeated OC

OPELOUSAS – It used to be a district showdown when the Blue Jays and Vikings met.
Tonight when St. Edmund visits Opelousas Catholic at Donald Gardner Stadium, it is now another step to get ready for their respective districts.
The Blue Jays (1-2) are looking to improve their record with a win over Iota (42-6) sandwiched between losses to Rayne (33-6) and Basile (42-20).
“As we move forward it is about cleaning up on offense,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “We need to protect the ball better, especially in the red zone.
“In our two losses we had chances to score points that have made thegame closer or even give us a lead,” the coach said.
“We didn’t do a good job executing which could be the difference in us being 2-1 or 3-0 instead of being a 1-2 team.”
The undefeated Vikings (3-0) have rolled to wins over Port Barre (40-12), Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (39-6) and Ascension Catholic (49-6).
“They have two good athletes at quarterback and running back,” David said of the Vikings. “They are good up front on their offensive and defensive lines.”
OC’s Caleb Vidrine gained 120 yards on nine carries and scored on runs of 1, 26 and 28 yards against AES last week.
Viking quarterback David Labbe completed 10-of-16 passes for 113 yards including a scoring strike to Aaron Miller.
The Blue Jays put up 365 yards of total offense in the loss to Basile, led by Drew Brown’s 21-of-37 passes for 358 yards.
David said his defense needs to do a better job of stopping the run.
“In our two losses, we gave up a ton of yardage,” he said. “We need to do a better job of making tackles and forcing turnovers.”
In the loss to Rayne, the Wolves rolled up 558 yards of total offense including 408 yards on the ground.
Last week Basile romped to 413 yards rushing and 494 yards of total offense.
“We need to stop drives and not give away first downs,” David said.
“We need to continue to improve this week against a quality ball club,” he said.
