Bobcats clip Wolves

The Eunice Bobcats closed out the Acadiana Metro League season by handing the Rayne Wolves a 5-4 defeat in baseball action Wednesday night at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats (7-4) scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a line drive single by Gunner Fontenot with a bases loaded.
With the score tied at 4-4, pinch hitter Brandon Martel drew a walk off Rayne pitcher Tommy Guidry to open the inning.
Alex Richard drew a walk to set up a sacrifice bunt by a Hayden West to move both runners.
Logan Dischler worked a walk off Guidry to load the bases with one out. Fontenot lined a 3-1 pitch into left field to score Martel with the winning run.
The Wolves took a 2-0 lead off Bobcat starter Christian Lejeune in the first inning with Rayne shortstop Hunter Keely having a key hit. The Wolves had two runners thrown out a home in the inning – center fielder Hayden West’ throw nailed one runner at home and Fontenot made a fine throw to Lejeune after a wild pitch to get the third out as a runner tried to score.
The Bobcats answered back in the bottom of the first inning with three runs. Logan Manuel, Jordan Comeaux, and Wes Hebert drew walks to load the bases. Lejeune walked to drive in a run and another scored as A.P. Sonnier reached safely on a fielders’ choice. Hebert scored the third run on a throwing error into the Rayne dugout in an attempt to throw out Sonnier at first base.
The Wolves regained the lead in the third inning with two runs. Grant Abshire drove in both runs with a single to put Rayne up 4-3.
The Bobcats tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth. Hebert tripled to open the inning and would score on Sonnier’s grounder. Bobcat relief pitchers Alec Trosclair and Jordan Comeaux would shut down the Wolves’ offense over the final four innings to set up Fontenot’s game-winning hit in the seventh.
Trosclair pitched two innings of hitless ball while walking one. Comeaux earned the win with two scoreless innings. He struck out three and allowed one hit.
