Bobcats cruise in jamboree

The Eunice High Bobcats scored three touchdowns on their first three possessions on the way to a 27-7 victory over the Sacred Heart Trojans in the nightcap of the Joe Nagata Memorial Jamboree played Friday at Bobcat Stadium.
“I like their attitude,” Eunice High head coach Paul Trosclair said. “I am pleased overall with what we did.”
The Bobcats received the opening kickoff and took just five plays to score a touchdown.
Quarterback Alex Richard connected with Brandon Nubuzyze for a 22-yard touchdown. The PAT attempt was blocked.
The Bobcat defense gave the ball right back to their offense after forcing a Trojan punt.
Nick Powell ran for four yards from the 16-yard line on first down before Richard hit Travis Godfrey with a pass which Godfrey turned into an 80-yard touchdown play. Georrein Dupre ran for the two-point conversion to give the Bobcats a 14-0 lead.
Dupre set up the third touchdown for the Cats with a punt return of 40 yards after the Trojans went three-and-out on their second possession of the game.
The Cats quickly took advantage of the excellent field position as Darin Serie scored on a 12-yard touchdown run with 3:35 left in the first half. Wes Hebert kicked the PAT to put the Cats on top 21-0 at halftime.
The Trojans received the second-half kickoff but a penalty stopped their momentum and they were forced to punt. The Cats took over at the 50-yard line.
After a penalty pushed the Cats back, Serie slipped past a tackle attempt in the backfield and broke loose on a 52-yard run that ended at the 6-yard line of the Trojans.
Powell’s six-yard run produced the fourth touchdown of the night to give the Bobcats a 27-0 lead after a missed PAT kick.
Sacred Heart got their offensive unit started on their next possession. The series began with back-to-back 13-yard runs by Garrick Fontenot and Julien Vidrine.
After a penalty, the Trojans converted a first down to set up two runs by Vidrine for nine yards. Two plays later, Fontenot connected on a pass to Seth Shipp for a touchdown from the 10-yard line. Alec Gotro kicked the PAT kick to make it 27-7 with 15.7 seconds left in the contest.
Richard finished the night with two of three pass completions for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Serie led the rushing attack with three carries for 67 yards. Godfrey led receivers with 80 yards on one reception.
Vidrine topped the rushing attack for the Trojans with five carries for 32 yards. Shipp led Sacred Heart receivers with two receptions for 16 yards and a touchdown.
“Our offensive execution was better than in the scrimmage,” the coach said. “We showed big-play potential.
“We need to get in better condition but I think we will be better for Friday,” Trosclair said.
The Bobcats will host Opelousas High to open the season on Friday. The Trojans will open their season on the road at Iota.
