Bobcats crush Red Devils

PORT BARRE – The Eunice High Bobcats scored five touchdowns in the first half on their way to a 35-16 victory over the Port Barre Red Devils in District 5-3A action here Friday night.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats used both the run and the pass to dominate the Red Devils in the first half.
The Red Devils had an opportunity early in the first quarter when Bobcat quarterback Jaden Brasseaux was intercepted and returned to the Eunice High 20-yard line.
But the Bobcat defensive unit held the Devils out of the end zone.
The key play was a sack of Port Barre quarterback Kieran Malveaux by Austin Deculus back at the Eunice 30.
The remainder of the half was dominated by the Cats.
Starting at their own 20 following a punt, the Bobcats drove 80 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown. Key play of the drive was a Brasseaux to Jordan Ledet pass covering 47 yards.
Brasseaux scored the touchdown on a two-yard run with 2:58 left in the first quarter.
Austin Phillips, who would finish five-for-five in PATs for the game, added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
The Bobcat defense forced a punt following the kickoff and the offense would make the Devils pay with a 74-yard, five-play scoring drive. Georrein Dupre scampered 51 yards on a third down and 22 play to set up the touchdown.
Avery Lee capped the scoring drive with a 15-yard run.
The PAT kick by Phillips put the Cats on top 14-0.
The Bobcat defense got into the scoring column on the Devils next possession. Brandon Ndubueze forced a fumble, picked it up and ran 36 yards for the touchdown.
Philips hit the PAT for a 21-0 lead with 5:57 left in the half.
The Red Devils tried to respond, but they were forced to punt, with the Cats taking over the ball at the Eunice 45. Dupre ran twice for a total of 21 yards and Brasseaux completed a pass to Dashawn Vigers for 28 yards to set up Lee’s six-yard touchdown run to give the Bobcats a 28-0 lead after the PAT kick by Phillips.
Port Barre picked up two first downs on their possession following the kickoff, but the Bobcat defense would get the ball back for its offense when Lukas Deculus sacked Malbreaux on fourth down at the Red Devil 40-yard line.
The Bobcat offense would take advantage as Brasseaux hit Lee with a short pass and Lee would turn it into a 60-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first half.
A Phillips PAT kick put the Cats ahead 35-0 going into halftime.
The two teams agreed to play running time in the second half. The Red Devils received the second-half kickoff but were forced to punt. The Cats were unable to move the ball on its possession and were also forced to punt.
Port Barre would get on the scoreboard on a 47-yard pass from Malveaux to Kendrell Jackson on the last play of the third quarter. Phillip Mallett ran for the two-point conversion to make it a 35-8 game.
The Eunice junior varsity offense was unable to move the ball following the kickoff and the Red Devils would take over after a Brasseaux punt.
The Red Devils would drive down the field and score on a 13-yard run by Sydney Pickney to make the final score 35-16 after a two-point conversion run by Mallett.
Top individual performers for the Red Devils included Mallett and Pickney with 45 and 32 rushing yards, respectively.
Eunice’s Georrein Dupre led Eunice with 81 yards on four rushes. Lee finished with seven carries for 40 yards. Brasseaux completed four of seven passes for 149 yards. Vigers caught two passes for 42 yards.
