Bobcats host Tigers in season opener
It will be a homecoming for Opelousas High head football coach Dwight Collins when the Tigers visit Eunice High Friday in the season opener.
Tyler Collins, who also played at EHS, is an assistant coach working wth his father.
“They are trying to rebuild the Tiger program and that is not easy to do,” EHS head coach Paul Trosclair said of the Tigers.
“They are young but have a lot of speed and we need to be ready.”
OHS has had five head coaches over the past 12 seasons and the Tigers struggled with a 6-54 record since 2009.
“They are trying to be balanced mixing the Wing-T and the spread,” Trosclair said of the Tigers.
Last year the Bobcats rolled to a 48-0 win over OHS.
Eunice has six straight over the Tigers as OHS last won 16-13 in 2006.
“Our guys are focused and want to start the season with a win,” Trosclair said.
The Bobcats scored three touchdowns on their first three possessions on the way to a 27-7 victory over the Sacred Heart Trojans in the nightcap of the Joe Nagata Memorial Jamboree last week.
Alex Richard connected with Brandon Nubuzyze for a 22-yard touchdown, followed by a 80-yard toss to Travis Godfrey and a 12-yard run by Darin Serie.
With a 21-0 lead at the break, Nick Powell added a six-yard touchdown run to cap the Bobcat scoring.
Richard finished the night with two of three pass completions for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
Darin Serie led the rushing attack with three carries for 67 yards.
Travis Godfrey led receivers with 80 yards on one reception.
“I thought our offensive line made a big jump from the scrimmage to the jamboree,” Trosclair said. “We also showed we have some big play capabilities.
“I thought our defense and special teams played well,” the Bobcat coach added.
Northwest senior runningback Chris Lee gained 106 yards on five carries and scored twice in the Raiders’ 32-0 win over Opelousas in the St. Landry Parish jamboree.
Northwest finished with 216 yards rushing and limited OHS to just 11 yards of total offense.
“We need to be ready to face an improved team,” Trosclair said. “OHS made a lot of mistakes against Northwest but they are a young team.”
