Bobcats maul Gators in finale

The Eunice High Bobcats opened their final regular season game by recovering an onside kick to stun the Beau Chene High Gators.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats took advantage of the recovery to drive 43 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead.
Junior quarterback Alex Richard scored the touchdown on an 11-yard run. Wesley Hebert kicked the PAT with 9:10 left in the first quarter.
Richard completed two passes to Terryl Poullard for 13 yards on the drive and Ty Ceaser added a 15-yard run to spark the drive.
The Gators tried to respond, picking up a first down at their own 37. But two plays later Christian Fontenot fumbled as he was sacked and an alert Hebert picked up the fumble and raced 21 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. Hebert missed the PAT kick, but the Cats led 13-0 at the 7:30 mark of the first quarter.
The Gators would fumble on their first play of their next possession. That mistake set up a Bobcat touchdown on a pass from Richard to Travis Godfrey covering 28 yards. Hebert again misfired on the PAT but the Cats held a 19-0 lead.
The Cats forced the Gators to punt on their next possession, with the Cats taking over the ball at their own 31.
On first down, junior running back Nick Powell found a hole in the middle and raced 69 yards for a touchdown.
Triston Frye ran for the two point conversion to put the Cats up 27-0 with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
“They were never able to get it going after we recovered that opening onside kick,” commented Coach Trosclair. “We just kept the pressure on them in that first quarter.”
Following Powell’s touchdown, the Cats forced a turnover when senior Devon Freeman intercepted a pass at the Eunice 31.
The Bobcats would march 69 yards in 11 plays to score yet another touchdown as Ceaser capped the drive with a 5-yard run. Key plays on the drive came on a 17-yard run by Frye and 14-yard run by Richard. Hebert was true on the PAT for a 34-0 lead with 9:36 left in the first half.
The Gators finally held on to the ball on their next possession, driving from their own 29 before stalling at the Eunice 32.
On fourth down, Cole Cormier attempted a 48-yard field goal, but the Cats blocked the attempt with five minutes remaining in the half.
Two plays later, the Cats would add to their lead as Richard teamed with Godfrey for a 50-yard touchdown pass. Hebert kicked the PAT to make it a 41-0 lead at the 4:04 mark of the second quarter.
The Cats received the second half kickoff and drove 73 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. Sophomore Georrein Dupre scored the touchdown on a 47-yard run. The PAT kick was wide but the Cats led 47-0 with 7:32 left in the third quarter.
The Gators finally put together a drive in the fourth quarter. Savion Broussard capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run against a defense heavily populated with younger Cats. Cormier was successful on the PAT kick to make it a 47-7 game with 7:42 left n the contest.
The Gators finished the regular season with a 3-7 overall mark and a 1-5 record in district play.
The Bobcats, who finished 4-6 overall and 2-4 in district play, await word on Sunday if they qualified for the state playoffs.
