ST. MARTINVILLE – Eunice opened the season with a 48-0 win over Opelousas High before the Bobcats stunned fifth-ranked Jennings for a 44-28 win over the Bulldogs.
“It was a big win for us,” Eunice High head coach Paul Trosclair said. “We clearly out played them and there was no doubt who should have won the game.
“But we have to put that behind us and move on to this week.”
St. Martinville is coming off a 21-12 loss to Assumption,
In their season opener against Jeanerette, the game was canceled in the second quarter following a melee between the two teams as St. Martinville held a 32-0 lead.
Former Northside head coach Vincent Derouen is the new leader of the Tigers.
“They like to mix it up on offense, “Trosclair said. “They use both a one-back I and then two backs.
“They are pretty balanced on offense,” the coach said.
St. Martinville is led by quarterback Jared David, runningback Cain Pitre and wide receiver Dylan Doucet.
“It is hard to keep their quarterback in the pocket,” Trosclair said. “They have some good athletes so tackling in open space will be key this week.”
The Bobcat defense has allowed an average of 135.5 yards of total offense the first two weeks.
By contrast, Eunice’s offense pushed an average of 462 yards of total offense.
“We have been moving the ball extremely well and it is nice when we can get a big lead,” Trosclair said of the 92 points the Bobcats have scored so far this season.
Darin Serie (15 - 157, 2 TDs), Nick Powell (19 - 132, 3 TDs) and Ian George (10- 99) are leading the way for the Bobcats rushing so far this season.
Senior quarterback Alex Richard has completed 10-of-15 passes for 217 yards with three touchdowns.
Terryl Poullard (5 - 90, 1 TD) and Travis Godfrey (4 - 61, 1 TD) are Richard’s main receivers in teh first two games.
Trosclair said the fast start to the season actually started in the offseason.
“This group committed themselves after last season to get better,” the coach said. “You have to give the seniors credit for being leaders.”
