Bobcats win 5-3A title
The Eunice High Bobcats claimed the District 5-3A championship with a 62-41 victory over the Pine Prairie Panthers in basketball action Tuesday night at the Bobcat gym.
The Bobcats finished the regular season with a 21-9 overall record and won eight of ten games to capture the district title.
The Bobcats began the game a bit slowly, holding only a 13-10 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Terreyll Poullard scored five points to lead the Bobcats in the quarter.
The Bobcats began to take control of the game in the second quarter, opening the quarter with an 8-2 scoring run to push its lead to 23-12. Mitchell Cormier led the Cats with six points in the quarter, tipping in a missed shot, driving into the lane for a goal after getting a pass from Kevin Williams, and rebounding a missed shot and scoring inside. Williams and Travis Godfrey added four points apiece as the Bobcats took a 32-19 lead into halftime.
The Cats added to their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers by a 13-6 margin. Malik Poullard opened the quarter by stealing the ball and driving for a basket. He later added two 3-point field goals for the Cats. Crowd-pleasing, breakaway dunks by Godfrey and Deshawn Vigers also highlighted the quarter as the Cats increased their lead to 45-25.
The Panthers’ Darnell Durgin tried to bring his team back in the fourth quarter, hitting two three-point field goals and scoring another with a drive to the goal. But Eunice High’s Brandon Ndubueze scored five points late in the quarter to secure the win for the Bobcats.
Malik Poullard led the scoring for the Bobcats with 11 points. Kevin Williams added nine, with Terreyll Poullard, Cormier, and Godfrey contributing eight points apiece. Ndubueze had seven for the Cats, with Halen Jack and Deshawn Vigers adding five and four points, respectively.
Dugin led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points. Douglas Fontenot add eight points for Pine Prairie.
“We had three goals we wanted to accomplish as a team,” said Bobcat head coach Chad Andrepont. “We wanted to win the St. Landry Parish Tournament, win the district championship, and make the state playoffs.”
“We accomplished all three goals and we’ll host a playoff game next week,” he added. “Our players brought into everything we talked about. It was 100 percent by the whole team.”
Andrepont didn’t forget about his assistant coaches, giving praise to Cody Miller and Laquintin Lamb for their efforts this season.
The LHSAA will release the boys playoff brackets on Monday.
Eunice concluded the season as the No. 12-seeded team and is expected have a first-round home game.
