Bobcats win parish title
PRAIRIE RONDE –The Eunice High Bobcats defeated the Port Barre High Red Devils 48-45 to capture its first St. Landry Parish Basketball Tournament championship since 2005.
Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats, who improved their overall record to 10-3 with the victory, used a third-quarter scoring surge to take control of the contest, which was played at Northwest High School this past Saturday.
“The third quarter was the key to the game,” commented Andrepont.
“We were behind 24-16 at the half, but we turned it around with a 16-4 advantage to take a 32-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
“The scoring went back and forth in the fourth quarter, but we held them off for the win.”
The Red Devils controlled the first half, taking a 12-8 advantage in each of the first two quarters. But the Cats controlled the second half by outscoring Port Barre by a 32-21 advantage over the second half.
Keshawn Fontenot scored 10 points in the first half to lead the Red Devils. The Bobcats used a balanced attack in the second half, with six players hitting the scoring column.
In the crucial third quarter, the Bobcats were led by Kevin Williams with six points and Mitchell Cormier with five points.
Terreyll Poullard added a three-point goal. In the fourth quarter, Poullard added three two-point goals and Williams contributed five points for the Cats.
Kevin Williams led the Bobcat scoring for the game with 17 points. He had two three-point field goals, four two-point goals, and was three of four from the free-throw.
Poullard finished with 12 points, while Georrein Dupre and Cormier finished with six and five points, respectively. Malik Poullard had three points, Brandon Ndubueze and Deshawn Vigers had two apiece, and Travis Godfrey had one point to complete the Eunice High scoring.
Fontenot finished with 22 points to lead Port Barre in scoring.
CLA 60, EHS 57
Despite a tremendous comeback after trailing 17-1 in the first quarter, the Eunice High Bobcats were not able to overcome the defensive play of the Christian Life Christians who prevailed by a 60-57 margin in a game played Tuesday night at the Bobcat gym.
The Bobcats battled back from their early deficit, trailing by only a 32-25 margin at halftime. The Bobcats would rally to win the third quarter by a 22-17 margin, trailing by only a 49-47 margin heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats would quickly tie the game at 49-49 on a drive to the goal by Halen Jack, then took a 51-49 lead on two free throws Deshawn Vigers.
But the Crusaders would go on an 8-0 run to push to a 57-51 lead with 3:19 left in the game.
The Bobcats battled back to cut to 59-57, but the Crusaders staved off the Bobcat comeback by hitting a free-throw and shutting out the Cats over the last 90 seconds of action.
The Crusaders, now 12-0 on the season, were led on offense by Ludovic Koder with 23 points. Sam Williams added 14 and Jacob Kibodi had 12.
The Bobcats were led in scoring by Georrein Dupre with 12 points. Brandon Ndubueze added 10 points and Malik Poullard chipped in with nine. Vigers and Kevin Williams had six points apiece.
Eunice will participate in the Lake Arthur tournament that begins Satuday and continues until Tuesday.
