Brumfield takes over struggling Demons

After struggling through 2-8 and 1-9 seasons, Mamou promoted Brian Brumfield to take over the Green Demon football program.
Beginning his third season with the Demons, Brumfield also spent 14 seasons at Oakdale after three years at Jennings.
Their only win last year came in the second week as the Demons rolled to a 35-17 win over South Cameron.
“The kids are working real hard and they are excited about the season,” Brumfield said. “They have a positive attitude heading into the year.
“I want the kids to believe they can win,” the coach said. “Mamou has a great tradition here and we want to bring that back.”
Former St. Edmund assistant coach Tre Brown has been promoted to offensive coordinator, while Brumfield will call the defensive plays.
“We will be more of a spread-type offense that includes the power running game,” he said. “It will be a learning experience as we go.”
Brumfield said the Mamou defense will be a 4-2-5, a defense with an attitude, hard-hitting and aggressive.
Mamou opens the season against Pickering (6-5) and closes district play against state champion Kinder (14-1).
“The whole schedule will be competitive,” Brumfield said,” both non-district and district will be pretty tough.”
After Pickering, the Green Demons take on South Cameron (2-9), Pine Prairie (2-8), Sacred Heart of Ville Platte (6-5) and Montgomery (9-4) in non-district play.
Mamou’s district schedule includes DeQuincy (3-8), Welsh (10-3), Vinton (10-3) and Lake Arthur (6-5) before the finale against Kinder.
“We have some big challenges ahead of us,” he said. “But we are hopeful that we can begin a turnaround.”
Mamou scrimmages at Oberlin on Friday and will face Ville Platte in the Evangeline Parish jamboree on Aug. 29.
