Comeaux leads Bobcats to win

MONROE – The Eunice High Bobcats claimed a 6-0 victory over 5A Southwood of Shreveport on Friday night to start play in the 2015 Trey Altick Louisiana Prep Classic.
Bobcat senior pitcher Jordan Comeaux no-hit the Cowboys through six innings, losing his no-hit bid when Christian Harris led off the seventh inning with a deep shot over centerfielder Christian Lejeune’s head. Lejeune turned and chased the ball, getting a glove on it but unable to hold on. Comeaux retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout. Comeaux (2-0) struck out nine and walked no one.
The Cats provided their pitcher with five runs in the first two innings. Gunner Fontenot opened the first with a single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and moved to third on Logan Manuel’s sacrifice bunt. Comeaux was hit by a pitch. Courtesy runner Travis Godfrey stole second base before Fontenot scored when Lejeune reached on an error. Godfrey later scored on a wild pitch to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Caleb Taylor singled and went to second on a wild throw. Christian Taylor was hit by a pitch, and Cade Richard’s reached safely on a bunt single. Fontenot’s drove in a run with a ground out and Manuel singled in the final run. Fontenot would later single and score the Cats’ final run in the top of the seventh.
On Saturday, the Bobcats dropped decisions to two other 5A teams, falling 6-5 to Central of Baton Rouge and 2-1 to Airline High of Shreveport.
Against Central, Caleb Taylor allowed a two-run home run by Brennon Fontenot in the top of the first innings. The Cats scored single runs in the first and second inning to tie the game. Fontenot singled and scored in the first on a grounder by Wes Hebert. Lejeune singled, advanced to third on a double by A. P. Sonnier, and scored in the on a groundout by Fontenot in the second.
Central pitcher Makhail Hilliard shut down the Cats over the next three innings, while his teammates added single runs in the third and fifth innings. Taylor was relieved by Sonnier after five innings, having allowed seven hits and three earned runs.
The Cats pulled within 4-3 with a run in the sixth as Manuel singled and scored on a single by Christian Taylor. But Central scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3. The Cats scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBIs by Richard and Hebert, but left two runners on base to end the game.
The Airline Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Fontenot tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a home run over the left field fence. Eunice pitcher Lejeune shut out the Vikings over the next four innings, but Peyton Davis led off the sixth inning with a single and was advanced to third with two bunts. Davis scored on suicide squeeze bunt executed by Cameron Taylor.
Airline’s Hayden Waxley and reliever Andrew Maxley allowed only two other hits by the Cats, singles by Comeaux and Sonnier.
