Eunice girls split in parish tourney
PRAIRIE BASSE – The Eunice High Lady Bobcats (4-7) won one and lost one this past week in the St. Landry Parish Basketball Tournament held here at Beau Chene High School.
After suffering an opening game loss to the Northwest High Lady Raiders on Wednesday, the Lady Bobcats bounced back to post a 46-32 victory over the Opelousas High Lady Tigers in a consolation contest played on Thursday.
The Lady Bobcats took control of the game against Opelousas in the first quarter, out-scoring the Lady Tigers by a 16-4 margin.
Dashaya Vigers led the scoring for the Lady Bobcats in that quarter with 11 points. Hali Jack added the other five.
The Lady Cats extended their lead with a 10-7 second-quarter edge for a 26-11 halftime lead.
The Lady Tigers were more competitive in the second half, topping the Lady Cats by a 21-20 margin over the final two quarters. But it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
Jack and Vigers topped Eunice High scorers with 21 points and 19 points, respectively.
Beulah Bradley added four and Mia Lejeune had two to complete the scoring. Destiny Pitre scored 10 points to lead the Lady Tigers.
NWHS 50, EHS 42
In Wednesday’s contest, the Lady Bobcats fell to the Lady Raiders by a 50-42 margin.
The banged-up Lady Cats fell behind by a 16-7 margin in the opening quarter and were never able to recover. The Lady Raiders led by ten points at the half.
The Lady Cats did out-score the Lady Raiders 23-21 over the final two quarters, but it wasn’t enough to erase the early lead built by Northwest.
Vigers led Eunice in scoring with 17 points. Jack added nine and Bradley chipped in with seven. Hannah Jack contributed five for the Lady Cats.
Kathan Arvie led the scoring for Northwest with 15 points. Sarah Brignace and Keshayla Jackson added 11 and nine points each for the Lady Raiders.
Eunice will entertain Mamou at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
PBHS 48, EHS boys 40
Eunice High Bobcats dropped both of their games in the St. Landry Parish Tournament this past week.
The Bobcats (3-7) opened the tournament on Wednesday with an eight-point loss to the Port Barre High Red Devils. On Thursday the Cats lost by eight points to the North Central High Hurricanes.
The Eunice High Bobcats stumbled in the second quarter and never recovered in a 48-40 defeat against the Red Devils.
The Bobcats trailed 12-11 after one quarter but were out-scored 18-10 in the second quarter to trail 30-21 at the half.
The Cats out-scored the Devils 11-10 in the third quarter, but they were never able to make a real run against in the final eight minutes.
The difference in the outcome could have been from the free-throw line. The Devils made 15 of 23 from the line while the Cats managed to make just seven free throws in 26 attempts from the line.
Kevin Williams led the Bobcats in scoring with nine points.
Devon Freeman added seven for the Cats.
Joe Fontenot and Jeremy Carron shared top scoring honors for Port Barre with eight points apiece.
Against the Hurricanes, the Bobcats fell behind early as they were outscored 23-8 in the first quarter and trailed 36-19 at the half. The Cats battled back in the second half as the Hurricanes by a 34-25 margin, but were unable to overcome their slow start.
Terryl Poullard led the Bobcats in scoring with 13 points. Kevin Williams added nine and Malik Poullard chipped in with eight points. Halen Jack, Brandon Ndubueze, and Keithan Green had five points apiece for the Cats.
The Bobcats will see their next action on Tuesday when they travel to Baton Rouge to face Christian Life.
