Eunice sweeps rival Bears
CHURCH POINT – The Eunice High Bobcats outscored the Church Point Bears by a 47-32 advantage in the second half to break open a close game on their way to a 69-58 victory here Friday night at the Bears’ gym.
The victory gives Coach Chad Andrepont’s Bobcats an overall record of 15-8 and a district mark of 2-1. The Bears fell to 11-8 overall and to 0-3 in 5-3A play.
The second half surge by the Bobcats was ignited by defensive effort after the Bears had claimed a 26-22 at the half. The Cats began the second half with a Halen Jack drive and a Malik Poullard 3-point field goal from the quarter to put the Cats up 27-26.
The Bears regained the lead on shots by Deshawn Wheeler and Troy Matte, but Poullard nailed another three-pointer to tie the game at 30-30 with 5:21 left in the third quarter.
The lead would bounce back and forth over the next few possessions, but free throws by Jack and Deshawn Vigers with 2:43 left put the Bobcats ahead by a 40-36 advantage.
The Bears’ Peter Shepherd hit a three-point goal to cut the lead to 40-39, but Vigers broke away for an easy bucket to give Eunice a 42-39 lead.
Wheeler and Kendrek Boast would lead a Bears’ comeback late in the quarter to give Church Point a 49-47 lead going into the final quarter.
The Bears would go up by a 51-48 advantage in the first minute of the third quarter and led 53-50 with 5:50 left on the clock. But Vigers and Travis Godfrey would each drive to the basket in back-to back possessions to give the Cats a 54-53 lead.
The Cats would maintain that lead after the Bears missed three free throws in one series. Kevin Williams didn’t miss on his two free throws with 2:42 left on the clock as the Bobcats increased their lead 56-53. The Bobcats would go on a 13-4 run to finish the game, highlighted by a dunk by Vigers and four successful free throws by Williams and Godfrey in the final minute of play.
The Bobcats went to the free-throw line 36 times and converted 23, while the Bears converted just seven of 19 from the line.
Williams led the Cats in scoring with 19 points, including eight of 10 from the line. Vigers added 15 points for the Cats, and Malik Poullard and Halen Jack chipped in with nine apiece. Brandon Ndubueze finished with six points.
Boast led Church Point with 20 points and Wheeler finished with 18.
The Bobcats will continue 5-3A action on Tuesday when they host the Port Barre Red Devils.
EHS girls 54, CP 25
The Eunice High Lady Bobcats used a 20-point first quarter to propel them to a 54-25 District 5-3A victory over the Lady Bears of Church Point here Friday night.
The victory improved the overall record of Coach Wayne Fontenot’s team to 11-10. The Lady Cats now hold a 4-1 mark in district play.
The Lady Bears, who dressed just six players for the game, fell to 1-15 on the season and are winless in district play.
The Lady Cats trailed 3-2 at the 5:39 mark of the opening quarter before Shay Vigers gave them the lead for good with a field goal at the 5:10 mark. The Lady Cats would never trail again.
Stacie White would go on to score eight points in the quarter, while Aisha Ledet would add six points on two field goals from beyond the 3-point arc to build a 20-3 lead heading into the second quarter.
Fontneot substituted liberally from that point onward. Shania Malveaux would lead the way in the second quarter with five points as Eunice High took a 33-12 lead into halftime.
The Lady Cats went on a 5-2 run to open the third quarter and Vigers would finished with eight points in that quarter.
The Lady Cats would seal the win with a 13-9 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Vigers led the Lady Cats in scoring for the game with 22 points, including two from 3-point land. White finished in double figures with 15 points. Ledet had eight points, with Mia Lejeune and Malveaux added five points apiece. Lakeera Garrett completed the scoring with two points.
Talia Jones led the Lady Bears with nine points. Gienisha Wheeler finished with eight points.
