Gators rally past Blue Jays
The Beau Chene Gators exploded for 21 straight points in the fourth quarter to steal a 21-12 win over St. Edmund Friday at Blue Jay Field.
“Missed opportunities was the story for us,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “We dropped a pass in the end zone, got down to the 1 and didn’t get in.
“We had an opportunity to set the ball game into our favor and we didn’t,” he said. “We had three chances and if we converted two of them it would have been a different story at the end of the game.”
St. Edmund was poised to grab an early lead after blocking a Beau Chene punt, but the Jays were stopped on fourth-and-goal at the Gator 3.
Beau Chene was forced to punt and the Jays moved 65 yards in 13 plays to take the lead.
On fourth down, Gibson LaFleur rumbled the final five yards. The two-point conversion failed, but St. Edmund led, 6-0 with 8:27 left in the second period.
The Blue Jay defense held on fourth down and moved deep into Beau Chene territory.
Markeille Richard snared an interception to end the St, Ed threat at the Beau Chene 3.
Three plays later the Blue Jays’ Peter Miller recovered a Gator fumble at the BC 2.
Drake Brunet quickly scored but the two-point conversion failed as St. Edmund led 12-0 with 1:38 left before intermission.
The Gators moved the ball to the Blue Jay 37 before the St. Edmund defense stiffened on fourth down to end the half.
Beau Chene threatened on their first drive of the third period but the Gators were stopped inches short on fourth down at the Blue Jay 20.
The St. Edmund offense also was stopped short on fourth down at the Gator 20.
After a Gator punt, an interception by Christian Cormier stopped the Blue Jays late in the third quarter and Beau Chene began their comeback.
An insportmanslike penalty against the Jays moved the Gators near midfield as the game shifted to the fourth quarter.
On fourth-and-11, Beau Chene’s Dontrae Eaglin raced 47-yards to the end zone.
Lucius Gardner’s kick closed the gap to 12-7 with 9:36 left in the game.
After St. Edmund only gained four yards on their next drive, the Beau Chene offense took over at the Gator 46.
On fourth-and-11, Eaglin broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown run.
Gardner’s kick extended the Gators’ lead to 14-12 with 7:08 left in the game,
The Gators then forced a short Blue Jay punt and took over at the St. Edmund 18.
Two plays later, Jylon Henry scored on a 19-yard run and Gardner’s PAT gave the Gators a crucial 21-12 advantage with 4:52 remaining in the contest.
The Jays failed to convert on fourth down with 3:30 left and the Gators then ran out the clock.
Brunet completed 15-of-33 for 134 yards, while LaFleur had 10 catches for 72 yards.
Eaglin finished with 134 yards on 24 carries for the Gators, while Markaylin Milburn added 82 yards on 14 carries.
The Blue Jays open District 5-1A action at False River Academy on Friday.
