Gueydan grabs win over Lady Cats
The Gueydan High Lady Bears took an early lead over the Eunice High Lady Bobcats and never surrendered it on their way to a 40-33 victory at the Bobcat gym.
Coach Durrel Peloquin’s Lady Cats fell to 9-3 overall with the loss.
The Lady Cats will open District 4-4A play on Monday when they hit the road to take on the Crowley High Ladies.
The Lady Bobcats took the lead in the first minute of the game with a basket from Dashaya Vigers for a 2-0 lead. After a 3-point field goal by Kylie Crochet gave Gueydan a 3-2 lead, the Lady Cats’ Ashley Washington scored after a rebound of a Eunice miss to put the Lady Cats up 4-3.
Nya Boudreaux’s 3-point field goal pushed the Lady Bears to a 6-4 lead, but the Lady cats tied it at 6-6 on a driving basket by Washington. But the Lady Cats would never tie or lead again in the game.
The Lady Bears would outscore the Lady Cats 8-1 over the final five minutes of the opening quarter for a 14-7 lead.
The Lady Bobcats put together a 12-8 run in the second quarter to cut the lead to 22-19 at the half. But Gueydan returned the favor with a 12-8 advantage in the third quarter to head into the final quarter with a 34-28 lead.
The Lady Bears protected their lead with a 6-5 advantage over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
Boudreaux led the Lady Bears for the game with 17 points. Crochet added nine and Ashari Terry chipped in with five for Gueydan.
Kate McLemore led the Lady Cats in scoring with seven points, though she was forced to leave the game in second half with concussion symptoms after a collision on the court. Washington and Hali Jack finished with six points apiece, while Vigers and Beulah Bradley added five apiece for the Lady Cats.
