Iowa grabs sweep over Lady Bobcats

The Iowa Lady Yellowjackets earned a 25-7, 25-17, 25-5 sweep over Eunice on the Lady Cats’ court.
Iowa (6-4) jumped out to a 9-0 lead with Kelsey Brashear serving before the Lady Cats scored three times to close the gap to 13-3.
With Grace Trahan serving, Iota went on a 6-0 run to push ahead, 20-3.
Eunice’s Ali Rae Lejeune recorded two aces and the Lady Cats took advantage of an Iowa unforced error to pull closer, 20-7.
Iowa then sealed the 25-7 win with a kill by Kylee Sittig, two Lady Cat errors and an ace by Amy Reed.
Eunice battled back to make the second game competitive before falling, 25-17.
The Lady Cats jumped out to a 4-1 lead, including a kill by Madison Guillory.
With Guillory serving, the Lady Cats forged a 7-3 advantage before Iowa went on a 7-0 run including kills by Sadie Roberts, Kolbie Brashear and Reed.
After kills by Guillory, Alexia Jason and Raquel Bernard to keep EHS in the game, Iowa responded with a 7-0 run to push ahead, 21-11.
Blocks by Guillory and LeJeune and an Iowa error helped Eunice close the gap to 22-15.
The Lady Cats added two more points, but Iowa sealed the win with a 3-0 run including a game-winning block by Kelsey Brashear.
In the final match, the Lady Jackets stormed out to a 10-1 lead, sparked by four kills by Roberts and several EHS errors.
Guillory recorded a kill for the Lady Cats and later a couple of Iowa miscues helped EHS close the gap to 16-4.
With Reed serving, the Lady Jackets went on a 4-0 run before an Iowa shot into the net stopped the surge.
The Lady Jackets sealed the sweep with a 5-0 run including an ace by Madeline DeBarge, a kill by Roberts and a block by Sittig.
“I’m still seeing the growth and potential,” Eunice head coach Therese Gianfala said. “The excitement for the sport is definitely there and the girls are dedicated to increasing their skills.
“The athletes are still becoming accustomed to the game, and with the changes in defense and offense during our off week last week, we should see an increase in our competitiveness.
“The team is getting many compliments on their skill level as a first year team,” the coach added. “We look forward to plenty of growth this year and are excited about the future.”
The Lady Cats (0-4) travel to Westminster Christian Academy 5:30 p.m. today before facing DeQuincy at home on Saturday.
