Jays set to invade Port Barre

With a 1-2 record, St. Edmund is working to improve as the Blue Jays travel to Port Barre Friday.
After three weeks, the Blue Jays have allowed an average of 293 yards rushing per game.
“We have to do a better job of stopping the run,” David said. “We have to get better fundamentally up front.”
In the 68-32 loss to Northwest, Raider running back Chris Lee finished with 260 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns.
In the 8-0 win over Iota, the Blue Jays limited the Bulldogs to 72 yards on the ground and 190 yards of total offense.
But in the 48-26 loss to Opelousas Catholic, the Vikings gained 436 yards rushing and 588 yards of total offense.
The Red Devils opened the season with a 28-7 loss to Opelousas Catholic before grabbing wins over Sacred Heart (18-17) and Beau Chene (27-13).
“We need to step up and compete,” David said. “The Red Devils have some good athletes and good size.”
Port Barre’s J.J. Sylvester gained 95 yards on 20 carries and scored three times in the Red Devils’ 2 win over Beau Chene last week.
“They are big up front and have several good running backs,” David said. “We need to establish the line of scrimmage.
“If we can stop the run against these guys then we give ourselves a pretty good chance to be successful.”
While the defense has struggled to stop teams so far this season, the Blue Jays are putting up yardage on offense.
St. Edmund quarterback Drake Brunet completed 18-of-34 passes for 338 yards with four touchdowns against Opelousas Catholic.
Gibson LaFleur had 12 catches for 240 yards including touchdowns of 7- and 67-yards against OC.
So far this season, Brunet has completed 47-of-103 passes for 784 yards with nine touchdowns and six interceptions.
LaFleur has 20 catches for 404 yards and five scores, while William Chachere has 10 receptions for 154 yards and three touchdowns.
“We need to get better as we prepare for district,” David said. “We are learning our identity and guys who will step up and make a difference.”
