Jennings runs past Bobcats

By John Burson

Offense dominated the action as the Jennings High Bulldogs visited the Eunice High Bobcats Friday night at Bobcat Field.
The Bobcats received the opening kickoff, but were unable to move the football and punted.
The Bulldogs took possession at their 26 and drove to the Eunice 44 before quarterback Kendrick Lejeune teamed with Ke’Uante Riggs on a touchdown pass. Isaac Lantz kicked the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
Coach Paul Trosclair’s Bobcats answered on the kickoff as Georrein Dupre returned the kickoff 34 yards to the Eunice 49. It took just five plays for the Cats to tie the game. Ian George ran for seven yards before Avery Lee rushed three times for 29 yards. Trevin Ceasar scored the touchdown on a 15-yard run. Austin Phillips kicked the PAT to tie the contest.
Dupre recovered a fumble and returned it 39 yards to give the Cats the football at midfield. The Cats had a touchdown called back due to holding, but scored on a third-and-22 on a pass from Lee to Dupre covering 28 yards to take a 13-7 after a failed PAT.
Jennings bounced back with a five-play, 64-yard touchdown drive that which featured a 19-yard run by Lejeune and a 34-yard touchdown run by Travis Etienne. Lantz kicked the PAT to put the Bulldogs ahead 14-13 with 6:11 left in the half.
On the first play for the Cats following the kickoff, Lee found running room for 54 yards. But the running back was caught at the 5-yard line and fumbled the football. It was recovered by the Bulldogs, who would control the action for much of the remainder of the first half. The Cats did get the ball back with over a minute to play, but the Bulldogs forced an interception and managed to scored on a two-yard run by Etienne to build a 21-13 lead at the half.
Jennings wasted no time in adding another score after receiving the second half kickoff. Etienne ran for two yards, then broke away on a 67-yard scoring run for a 27-13 lead with 11:12 left in the third quarter.
The Cats struck back with a 78-yard scoring drive after receiving the kickoff. Lee carried six times for 27 yards on the 8-play drive, which was capped by Lee’s one-yard run. The lone pass play on the drive was a Jaden Brasseaux pass to Dashawn Vigers covering 34 yards. Phillips added the PAT kick to cut the lead to 27-20.
The Bulldogs struck quickly on their first play from scrimmage following the kickoff. Darrian Achane found a whole over left tackle and sped to the end zone on a 64-yard touchdown run to make it a 33-20 contest with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
The Cats, aided by three 15-yard penalties against the Dogs, moved from their own 15 to the Bulldogs’ 15, but failed to convert a fourth-and-9 at that point, turning the ball over to the Bulldogs.
The Cats forced a punt, but couldn’t move the ball. After they punted to the Bulldogs, Jennings’ quarterback Lejeune burned the Cats with a 63-yard touchdown run.
The Cats did add a touchdown with 7:07 left in the game on a touchdown pass from Vigers to Jordan Ledet covering 38 yards. Phillips converted the PAT kick to pull the Cats to within a 40-27 margin. But the Bulldogs would maintain control of the football for the remainder of the contest.
Rushing totals for both teams were impressive. Lejeune finished with 155 yards on seven carries, and Etienne carried 16 times for 147 yards.
Lee led the Bobcats with 160 yards rushing on 22 attempts.
Eunice (1-1) entertains St. Martinville (2-0) on Friday.
The Tigers defeated Jeanerette (40-8) and Assumption (13-8) to open the season.
