Lady Cats grab historic win

After going winless in 2015 and starting 0-11 this season, the Eunice Lady Cats won their first game with a 3-0 sweep over Northwest Tuesday night.
“This was a long time coming,” Eunice head coach Therese Gianfala said. “They are starting to understand the game and they are working hard to improve.
“I am excited about the win,” she said. “They have shown a lot of growth since the beginning last year.
“I want them to be competitive,” the coach said of her young team.” I want them to see they can win.”
The Lady Cats opened with a 5-1 run over the Lady Raiders, aided by a pair of aces by Angelle Ortego and three Northwest errors.
Eunice pushed ahead 10-5 before the Lady Raiders responded with a 4-0 run to close the gap.
The Lady Cats answered with a 5-1 surge, sparked by Ortego.
The battle continued as Northwest closed the margin to 15-12, but another 4-0 run by the Lady Cats increased the EHS lead to 18-12.
The Lady Raiders closed the gap to 19-15, but two kills by Olivia Adamson gave the Lady Cats a 23-15 lead.
After a kill and ace from Northwest, Eunice earned the 25-17 on a service error and an out-of-bounds hit.
In the second game, the Lady Cats opened with a 6-2 run sparked by a kill by Adamson and several Lady Raider errors.
Kills by Ali Rae Lejeune and Ortego pushed Eunice ahead, 10-4.
The battle continued as each team managed several short rallies to keep the game close.
With a 22-16 advantage, the Lady Cats finished with a 3-1 surge sparked by a kill from Felicity Thibodeaux and a game-winning serve by Kelsea Aguillard.
Eunice began third set with a 5-2 run, aided by an ace by Raquel Bernard along with crucial plays by Adamson.
Northwest battled to close the margin to 8-7 but a 5-1 run helped the Lady Cats grab momentum and a five-point cushion.
After a kill by Amber Arvie to increase the EHS lead to 13-8, the Lady Raiders fought back to close the gap to 14-11.
Several Northwest errors allowed the Lady Cats to push ahead, 17-12 but the Lady Raiders continued to battle back.
A 6-2 run by the Lady Cats sealed the 25-17 win, sparked by an ace from Ortego and a block by Arvie.
EHS (1-11 overall, 1-1 in District 3, Division III) travels to Crowley today as district play continues.
Northwest (2-6 overall, 0-2 in District 3, Division III) travels to Rayne.
