Lady Jays to get own field
After decades of playing softball on city-owned fields, the St. Edmund Lady Jays will have their own home when the next season starts.
On Thursday, June 19, a group gathered near the Blue Jay athletic complex for a groundbreaking and prayer dedication as the process begins to take shape.
The Lady Jay field will be located in the southeast corner of the property.
St. Edmund principal Sister Joel Miller said while the project took a long time to get to where it is, she is excited about the girls having their own field.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for them to host teams there,” she said. “It is great to have home-field feeling and ownership.
“The most exciting part is that it will be ready for the upcoming season,” Miller said.
The principal said the field is being constructed by donations and she is grateful for their involvement.
“We couldn’t do this without them and we are always thankful,” she said.
Project director Brad Miller said they have begun moving dirt.
“The first step is to level it and then add the field sand,” he said. “We will put the topsoil back so the grass will grow.
Miller said they will then build the backstop, dugouts and then add the fence.
Miller said the project is expected to cost around $60,000.
“It will be a big asset to the school,” he said. “It will be a park every one will be proud of.”
Miller said they are hoping to have it all completed by the end of the year.
