A national championship in his sight
Iota High graduate Spencer Lejeune has one more thing to do before putting his high school career behind him.
Lejeune will compete in the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational June 24-29 in Grand Lake, Neb.
The 17-year-old son of Chad and Monica Lejeune of Eunice has been shooting for the past four years in 4-H but this is his first trip to the national meet.
“I am looking forward to the experience,” Lejeune said. “I will be competing with four others from our state.”
Lejeune will participate in the compound bow FITA round, Field round and 3-D during the three days of competition.
“In the FITA, you shoot 94 shots at a target between 30 meters to 60 meters away,” he said.
“I will also shoot in the 3-D which targets are set at unknown distances from five feet away to 60 feet away.”
Lejeune said in the Field round, different targets are set a different distances.
He said the 3-D competition is the toughest because of the unknown distances.
“You set your sight at 40 yards and you miss it because it is at 50 yards,” he said. “That happened to me at state when I shot just under and it cost me first place.”
Like any sport, Lejeune said practice makes the difference.
“It is going to take concentration to adjust to the environment, the wind,” he said.
In the state competition to advance to nationals, Lejeune finished second in the FITA and Field to earn a spot on the team.
