No. 9 Wolves, Blue Jays clash
The Class 1-A Blue Jays are jumping from the kettle into the fire this week in their season opener.
Last Thursday in the Joe Nagata Memorial Jamboree, St. Edmund grabbed an 8-7 win over Class 3-A foe Port Barre.
On Friday, the Blue Jays entertain the Rayne Wolves, the ninth-ranked team in Class 4-A.
“It is a huge challenge,” SEH head coach Thomas David said. “We need to focus, show up and compete if we want a chance to win.”
The last three seasons, the Wolves have rolled to 34-7, 41-19 and 45-19 wins.
“They are good ball club and if we give them opportunities to put us away, they will,” the coach said.
“We have had a ton of turnovers the last few years that put them on a short field and killed drives for us.
“We do that again, we will get beat.”
David said an opener against a quality opponent will help his team the rest of the season.
Rayne earned a 13-6 win over Church Point in the Acadia Parish jamboree.
Deontrey Wildridge gained 44 yards on 12 carries and scored on runs of 7 and 1-yard.
The Wolves finished with 97 yards rushing and 91 yards passing in a balanced attack.
Church Point put up 90 yard on the ground and an impressive 170 yard passing against the Wolves.
“I thought we were sloppy on both sides of the ball,” David said of the jamboree against the Red Devils. “We have a lot of issues to clear up if we want to be successful this season.
“But it was a dress rehearsal under the lights,” the coach continued. “Hopefully we will do a better job with execution.”
David said his team needs to improve on both sides of the ball heading into the opener.
“If we compete and give ourselves a chance it could be a pretty good night,” he said. “If we go out and lay an egg it could get ugly early and stay ugly late.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m at Blue Jay Field.
