Offenses explode in Blue Jay scrimmage
There were both high lights and mistakes made during St. Edmund’s srimmage with Elton.
Elton rolled up an unofficial 285 yards of total offense in the 18-12 win over the Blue Jay first and second teams.
St. Edmund excelled on offense as the Blue Jays recorded 395 yards of total offense including 226 yards rushing.
“I thought we got better as it went on defense,” St. Edmund head coach Thomas David said. “Early on we had some busts that gave up big plays as we left parts of the field uncovered.
“Offensively we did a good job of moving the football,” David said. “We need to clean up things on that side of the ball.”
After both second team offenses failed to score on their opening possessions, the Indians stars shone with two impressive touchdowns.
Marcus Lemoine capped an eight-play, 70 yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run for the Indians.
Elton quarterback Quincy Dewees later connected with Oshae Doffney for a 70-yard scoring strike to push the Indians ahead 12-0.
The Blue Jays responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive, capped with a 5-yard touchdown toss from Drew Brown to Gibson LaFleur to close the gap to 12-6.
The Indians again hit a long scoring strike from Dewees to Doffney, this time a 52-yarder to give Elton a 18-6 advantage.
The Blue Jays answered with a seven-play, 75-yard drive finished with a 15-yard scamper by Zach LaFleur to pull St. Edmund closer, 18-12.
Elton’s Jamal Wilson added a 68-yard scoring run when the third teams battled.
After the controlled scrimmage concluded, the two teams battled for an addtional 20-minute, real- game setting.
The St. Edmund defense stood tall, stopping Elton on fourth downs twice both inside the Blue Jay 20.
St. Edmund offense mounted an impressive 10-play drive as the Jays appeared ready to score.
But an interception at the Indians’ 3 yard line stopped that chance and time ran out on the next Blue Jay drive that ended at the Elton 7.
“I thought we handles the speed of the game okay,” David said of the scrimmage. “We need to cut down on the mental mistakes.
“We did a lot of good things, we just need to be more consistent.”
St. Edmund will face Port Barre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Joe Nagata Memorial jamboree.
