Red Devils clip Jays, 6-0

By Tom Dodge

Port Barre scored with 25 seconds left in the first half and that touchdown was all the Red Devils needed in a 6-0 win over St. Edmund at Blue Jay Field Friday.
Kieron Malveaux connected with Easton Shelvin on an 18-yard fourth-down pass to give the Red Devils a six-point advantage heading into the intermission.
After both teams exchanged punts to open the game, the Blue Jays halted a Red Devil drive when St. Ed’s Austin Miller made a diving interception at the Jay 31 with 4:00 left in the quarter.
The St. Ed’s drive was halted on fourth down at the Red Devil 20 with 9:39 left in the half.
Two plays later, Carter Andrus recovered a Port Barre fumble to give the Jays the ball at the Red Devil 20.
Again the Blue Jays could not move the ball at the Red Devils got the ball back on downs at the Port Barre 18 with 8:10 remaining in the second period.
It was the Blue Jay dedfense’s turn to make a play as St. Ed’s held the Red Devils on fourth down.
The Jays were forced to punt and the Red Devils then went on a seven-play, 78-yard scoring drive for the game’s only points.
“Our guys fought hard and never quit,” St. Edmund head coach Andy Hargroder said. “The defense kept us in the game, but we need to execute better on offense.
“We had our chances but we just need to correct the mistakes,” the coach said. “We thought we had a good game plan but in our offense we can’t have penalties on crucial downs.”
The two defenses dominated the third period as every drive ended in punts.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Malveaux connected with Alex Olivier for an apparent 27-yard touchdown.
But a holding call erased the points and three plays later, St.Edmund’s Alex Stelly recovered a Red Devil fumble at the Blue Jay 16 with 10:23 left in the game.
The two teams would exchange punts as the Blue Jays had a chance to pull out the victory with 6:39 left in the fourth quarter.
A personal foul hit out-of-bounds by the Red Devils allowed the Jays to keep the drive alive.
Three strong runs by Luke Doucet and another by Jack Miller gave the Jays a first down at the Red Devil 36.
But after an illegal shift flag and a short run by Doucet, Port Barre’s Olivier stepped in front of a Peter Miller pass to stop the drive at the Red Devil 34.
After the Blue Jay defense forced another punt, St. Edmund started at their own 39 with 2:08 left on the clock.
After Peter Miller gained two yards, a quarterback sack by Port Barre and two incomplete passes ended the Blue Jay drive and the Red Devils held on for the win.
Port Barre finished with 212 yards of total offense, including 133 yards on the ground.
Port Barre’s Sidney Pickney led all rushers with 64 yards on 22 carries, while Phillip Mallett gained 59 yards on 10 carries,
