Sacred Heart -VP sweeps St. Edmund

Sacred Heart of Ville Platte used a sweep over rival St. Edmund to finish the first half of District 5-1A play in second place behind leader North Central.
The Lady Trojans began the night with a 40-24 win over the Lady Jays, while the Trojans battled to a 69-49 victory over St. Edmund.
The Lady Jays (1-14, 1-2) keep the game close early with backets from Abby Miller and Allison LaFleur.
Sacred Heart (10-10, 3-1) went on a 12-4 run before Camille Leger scored in the lane to close the Lady Trojan lead to 12-6.
SHVP opened the second period with a 5-0 run before Elissa David drilled a trey for the Lady Jays with 2:42 left before the break.
Lady Trojan Gabby Andrepont and St. Ed’s Miller exchanged buckets in the paint as Sacred Heart took a 19-11 advantage into intermission.
Sacred Heart pushed ahead 24-11 early in the third period sparked by a three-point play by Hannah Lemoine.
Leger exploded for six straight points to close the gap to 24-17 as the game moved to the final quarter.
Sacred Heart opened the fourth period with a 5-0 run, including a three-point play by Kara Aguillard.
Maggie Larrieviere scored from the baseline to keep the Lady Jays within 10 points, 29-19 with 5:53 left.
After Andrepont scored for the Lady Trojans, Miller hit two free throws for St. Edmund.
Sacred Heart went on a 9-3 run to close the game before the Lady Jays finished the night with a free throw and a drive in the lane by Kelli Richard.
Andrepont led the Lady Trojans with 12 points, while Leger scored eight points as the Lady Jays’ top scorer.
St. Edmund will entertain Catholic High of Pointe Coupee on Tuesday night.

St. Edmund (2-15, 0-4) opened the game with a 2-0 lead with a put-back by Jaque Richard to excite the homestanding Blue Jay faithful.
Sacred Heart (6-12, 3-1) responded with a 10-0 run, sparked by back-to-back treys by Sean Fontenot.
William Chachere drilled a trey of his own to close the gap to 9-5 midway through the period.
A 7-0 run including another trey from Fontenot pushed the Trojans ahead, 16-5,
Dylan Bieber completed a three-point play for the Jays, but the Trojans answered with a 5-0 surge including a pair of second-chance buckets by Chris Tate and Conner Fontenot.
Chachere hit two free throws in the final seconds to close the margin to 21-10 as the game moved into the second quarter.
Sacred Heart’s Seth Shipp scored twice in the lane early in the period as the Trojans pushed ahead, 25-10.
Bieber scored twice underneath and John Ross Guillory hit back-to-back treys to pull the Jays closer, 25-20.
Warren Fontenot hit a free throw in the final seconds to give the Trojans a 26-20 advantage at the break.
The Blue Jays exploded for a 10-0 run to begin the third period, including five points from Guillory, a trey by Alex Hunt and a drive in the lane by Chachere as St. Edmund took its first lead since the opening seconds of the game.
The 30-26 lead was short-lived as Sacred Heart answered with an 8-0 run with two buckets each by Sean Fontenot and Mickey Laughlin.
A jumper by Guillory and two free throws by Chachere helped the Jays close the gap to 37-34, but the Trojans responded with a 7-0 surge including a trey by Chris Tate.
Hunt recovered a loose ball and scored with three seconds left as St. Edmund closed the margin to 44-36 heading into the final quarter.
Bieber scored on a put-back early in the fourth period, but Sacred Heart went on a 15-0 surge capped by a pair of treys from Tate.
St. Edmund battled back with six straight points including a baseline jumper by Guillory to close the gap to 59-44 with 3:12 left.
Five points from Sacred Heart was answered by free throws from Chachere and Richard as the Jays fought to stay in the game, 63-46.
After Sacred Heart scored in the lane with 1:04 left, the rest of the game was spent at the free throw line as the Trojans sealed the 20-point win.
Sean Fontenot led Sacred Heart with 23 points, while Tate chipped in 18 points.
Guillory scored 18 points to lead St. Edmund followed by Chachere’s 12 points. Bieber chipped in nine points, while Hunt added seven points.
